Job description

Corporate Tax Lawyer - 1-2 years PQE

Location: Birmingham

Contract Type: Permanent

The Brief

We are currently looking to recruit a Corporate Tax Lawyer between 1-2 years of experience in our Corporate Tax team at our Birmingham office.

You would be working closely with Jamie Robson, Corporate Tax Partner based in Birmingham and joining a team that will give you the opportunity to work on significant tax mandates across the country and cross border.

This is an excellent opportunity to work on a wide variety of corporate tax matters from both a transactional and advisory point of view, including advice across the spectrum of corporation tax, property tax, employment tax, funds and financing tax and cross-border tax matters.

Our corporate tax team is spread across our UK and international offices. Whilst located in Birmingham you would be part of a wider team which work cross office and you can expect to interact with other members of the team at all levels of experience on a daily basis.

About the Team

We have a market leading tax practice offering City quality work inside and outside of London. We regularly work for listed companies, foreign owned companies, public sector bodies, institutional investors and banks.

This is a core area of our practice providing tax advice on corporate, property and commercial structures and transactions for both our own clients and those of the firm's corporate, property and projects groups. The work includes restructuring and demergers, mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, funding transactions and private equity/fund investments.

You would be joining a team that will give you the opportunity to work on significant transactions across the country and internationally.

The tax team won Best Specialist Team for our energy sector practice at Tolley's Taxation Awards 2024, showing that the value of this expertise is recognised by a panel of our peers.

Key clients and work

Our key clients include multinational companies operating across sectors but in particular operating within the energy and natural resources sector and being involved in the energy transition.

Our key work has recently involved:
  • Advising a number of such clients on their joint venture arrangements in connection with renewables projects;
  • Advising major multinational entities on their acquisition and disposal of North Sea oil & gas assets;
  • Advising a significant Dutch pension scheme client on various international fund investments;
  • Providing corporation tax advice in relation to the application of the UK transfer pricing regime on cross-border transactions; and
  • Ongoing advice in respect of the application of Stamp Duty Land Tax on property transactions, including the application of s.75A Finance Act 2003.

About the Person

We are looking to appoint a qualified lawyer with 1-2 years PQE to join our Corporate Tax team.

The ideal candidate will have experience in corporate tax transactional matters (in particular M&A) but this is not essential.

Required experience and attributes include:
  • experience of tax work gained during their training contract, ideally with a City firm or large regional practice;
  • a proven team player, able to forge strong working relationships with colleagues in an agile environment;
  • excellent academics, technically accomplished, with sound commercial judgment;
  • the interpersonal skills necessary for developing and managing on-going relationships with an existing client base as well as helping to win and grow new opportunities; and
  • able to work both as part of a team on large transactions as well as handling your own matters with support from colleagues.

Candidates whose career aspirations/main focus is on tax litigation, share plans, or private client advisory work would not be suitable for this role.
