Job summary

The Somerset FT Radiology Department provides a full imaging and interventional service to cover the Hospital's role as a busy District General Hospital.

We are looking for motivated and enthusiastic Interventional Radiologists to form a team of 6 Radiologists, while enjoying plentiful opportunities for professional development in vascular and non-vascular intervention. A colleague with interest in Uro-radiology IR would be beneficial to support prostate artery embolization (PAE) and PCNL regional services.

Somerset NHS Foundation Trust serves a diverse patient population primarily within Somerset, extending services to parts of West Dorset, and North Devon.

It manages two acute hospitals: Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton and Yeovil Hospital. Musgrove Park Hospital caters to a local population of around 340,000, offering both general and specialist services. Yeovil Hospital serves about 180,000 individuals across South Somerset, North and West Dorset, and parts of Mendip.

Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is a member of the West of England Imaging Network. Taunton is the hub site for the Somerset Vascular Network. Taunton is a British Society of Interventional Radiology (BSIR) exemplar site. Approximately 18.5k IR procedures were performed across the trust in 2023/2024.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will be supported in the development of new services or specific areas of interest wherever possible. A full contribution to the on-call service on the Musgrove Park site will be expected from the new appointee on a non-resident 1:6 basis. It is well supported by a team of dedicated Interventional Nurses and Radiographers. There is no diagnostic on-call commitment. Please see Job Description document for full details.

Other duties include image guided biopsy and drainage lists, general vascular and aortic aneurysm multi-disciplinary meeting delivery, IR clinic and reporting of regional vascular imaging. There is a small commitment to general reporting.

The post holder will be expected to observe a degree of flexibility within the proposed job plan to allow for a flexible approach to service needs. The proposed timetable will be open to change following discussion with the Clinical Lead.

Somerset and North Devon vascular network has a population of > 800,000 and incorporates North Devon and Yeovil districts in addition to the local Taunton and Somerset population. All aneurysmal work, all emergency vascular treatments and vascular reporting is undertaken on the Taunton site. Elective IR work from Yeovil is performed at Taunton and we deliver a 'spoke service' to North Devon for day-case angioplasty. We accept various non-vascular referrals for IR from this territory

• Team ethos and dynamics at both sites: evidence of great team working within and between the consultant, nursing, sonography and radiography teams. Radiology trainees consistently rate the trust highly and gave positive feedback at the visit.
• Excellent multi-disciplinary and innovative team working at the Yeovil site with a busy 9-5 Mon-Fri non-vascular IR (NVIR) service delivered by radiologists and advanced practice sonographers. There are several examples of innovative/advanced practice at this site, especially given the size of the department and hospital, including consultant sonographer-led NVIR services, outpatient and domiciliary paracentesis service for palliative care patients, Botox injections for thoracic outlet syndrome and shoulder capsular distension procedures.
• Highly positive feedback from referring teams (especially the urology and vascular surgery teams at Taunton, and the respiratory and oncology teams at Yeovil).
• Good anaesthetic support at Taunton despite being ad-hoc (currently no planned GA lists).
• Trauma protocol in place at Taunton for paediatric trauma care, including IR.
• Vascular hybrid theatre under construction at Taunton, opening early 2026.
• Sonographer-led training of multi-disciplinary teams within the respiratory, intensive care, oncology/palliative care, emergency department and upper GI services to learn aspects of paracentesis and thoracocentesis is innovative and impactful for service delivery and the patient experience across the trust.
