Job summary

CSS Recruitment is seeking an Assistant Buyer for an established civil engineering contractor in Bury St Edmunds. You will support procurement across materials, plant, equipment and services, working with project teams, suppliers and subcontractors to secure competitive pricing and timely delivery.

The role suits an organised, commercially minded individual with strong communication skills, capable of handling multiple procurement tasks in a busy team.

Qualifications

• Previous experience in a purchasing, buying or procurement role would be advantageous.
• Experience within construction or civil engineering would be beneficial but is not essential.
• Good communication and negotiation skills.
• Strong organisational skills with excellent attention to detail.
• Confident using Microsoft Office and general computer systems.
• Able to work effectively within a busy team environment.
• A proactive approach with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.

Responsibilities

• Assisting with the procurement of construction materials, plant and services.
• Raising and processing purchase orders.
• Liaising with suppliers and subcontractors to confirm pricing, availability and delivery schedules.
• Monitoring orders and ensuring materials are delivered to site when required.
• Building and maintaining effective relationships with suppliers.
• Supporting the wider buying and commercial teams with day-to-day procurement activities.
• Maintaining accurate purchasing records and documentation.
• Identifying opportunities to improve purchasing efficiency and value for money.
