Job summary

Royal High School Bath is seeking a practical and organised Design Technology Technician to join our busy DT workshops. You will prepare materials, maintain machinery, and support teachers and students during practical activities across our design and making spaces.

Experience with workshop health and safety procedures is essential, while experience in education or transferable skills from engineering or manufacturing is welcome.

Job description

Hours: 28.8 hours a week over 4 days, term time only (including 8 staff training days), plus 10 additional days, worked through extended hours during term time. If you are a practical, organised and safety-conscious technician who enjoys supporting young people to develop creative and technical skills, this is an exciting opportunity to join a thriving Design Technology department within a busy and vibrant school community. Working across our specialist Design Technology workshops and teaching spaces, you will play a key role in ensuring the safe, effective and creative delivery of practical lessons. You will prepare materials and resources, maintain machinery and equipment, support teachers and students during practical activities, and help create an inspiring learning environment where students can develop their design and making skills with confidence. This is a varied and hands-on role involving workshop management, machinery maintenance, stock control, health and safety compliance, preparation of materials, display work, photography and general departmental support. You will work closely with teaching staff to ensure that lessons, projects, exhibitions and co-curricular activities run smoothly and safely. You will bring practical workshop experience, strong organisational skills and a proactive approach to problem solving. Experience working with woodworking, metalworking and plastic fabrication equipment would be advantageous, together with an understanding of workshop health and safety procedures and risk management. The ability to work independently, communicate effectively and maintain high standards of organisation and safety will be essential. Experience within education would be welcomed, although we would also like to hear from candidates working in engineering, manufacturing, construction, workshop environments or technical support roles who can demonstrate transferable skills and a commitment to supporting young people. This role could particularly suit an experienced Design Technology Technician, Workshop Technician, Engineering Technician, Manufacturing Technician, Fabrication Technician, Craft Technician or a practical professional looking to bring their technical expertise into an educational environment.
