Job summary

Stephen Perse in Cambridge seeks two part-time School Porters to ensure a clean, safe and welcoming environment for staff, students and visitors. The role includes meeting and greeting at events, portering and driving duties, maintaining grounds and supporting the Estates team with checks and maintenance.

The positions are term-time plus an extra week in August, with shifts from 13:00 to 17:30 or 13:30 to 18:00, totaling 22.5 hours per week.

  • Maintain overall appearance of school grounds and regular property checks
  • Move furniture and set up for school functions
  • Support Estates with compliance checks (weekly fire alarm, fire exit, extinguisher checks) and report maintenance issues
  • Deliver post, parcels and items to departments and manage waste areas
  • Assist with smaller repairs and follow Health & Safety procedures and data protection policies

Role Description

The School Porter plays a vital role in ensuring the smooth running of the school by maintaining a clean, safe and secure environment for staff, students and visitors. As the friendly face of the school for many visitors, you will provide a positive first impression and contribute to the overall well-being of the school community.

This role is to commence ideally as soon as possible, and we are recruiting for 2 positions.

Main Responsibilities:
  • Acting as meet and greet for visitors and events, this may include out of hours events (including Open Days).

  • Portering duties.

  • Driving duties for Forest School, Home to School Transport, PE, trips, Co-curricular, PE and any ad hoc requirements.

  • Maintaining the overall appearance of all school grounds.

  • Regular property checks and completion of any actions required.

  • Moving furniture and setting up for various school functions.

  • Supporting the Estates department with relevant compliance checks (inclusive of weekly fire alarm, fire exit, extinguisher checks etc).

  • Deliver post, parcels and ad hoc items to various departments.

  • Management of waste areas and collections.

  • Assist with smaller scale routine repairs and maintenance if required and reporting maintenance issues via the Estates ticketing system.

  • Ensure drains are cleared.

  • Clear up all spillages.

  • Any other duties allocated.

General Responsibilities
  • Act as an excellent ambassador for Stephen Perse at all times.

  • Build and maintain good working relationships with all Stephen Perse colleagues.

  • Assist as necessary in other Stephen Perse areas at peak times.

  • Work at all times towards the aims and goals of Stephen Perse and any individual objectives and targets you may have agreed.

  • Proactively identify areas for improvements within Stephen Perse.

  • Actively promote Stephen Perse Equal Opportunities Policy, encouraging staff awareness and participation in all areas.

  • Act in accordance with the Data Protection principles at all times.

  • Adhere at all times to Stephen Perse operational and employment policies and procedures.

Safeguarding and welfare of children

The post holder’s responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young persons for whom s/he is responsible, or with whom s/he comes into contact, will be to adhere to and ensure compliance with Stephen Perse’s Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy statement at all times. If, in the course of carrying out the duties of the post, the role-holder becomes aware of any actual or potential risks to the safety or welfare of children in the School, s/he must report any concerns to the School’s Designated Person or the Stephen Perse Designated Safeguarding Lead.

All employees of Stephen Perse adhere to the Safer Working Practices guidance and all teaching staff are required to adhere to the Teaching Standards which can be found on the government website.

Terms and conditions

All appointments for Stephen Perse are subject to satisfactory reference and disclosure and barring service (DBS) checks, suitability to work with children checks, online checks, proof of identity and eligibility to work in the UK, completion of a medical questionnaire and proof of qualifications.

Hours of work

This is a part-time, term time (plus one additional week to be worked during the summer closure period in August), to include all INSET days.

We are recruiting for two positions, working hours as follows:

  • 13:00-17:30, 4.5 hours per day, 22.5 hours per week.

  • 13:30-18:00, 4.5 hours per day, 22.5 hours per week.

Salary

The salary on offer is £15.12 per hour (£29,484 FTE).

If you do not have a D1 category driving licence, the salary will be:

  • Based on working 20 hours per week the salary will be £11,156 pro rata (£25,652 FTE).

  • Based on working 22.5 hours per week the salary will be £12,550 pro rata (£25,652 FTE).
