Job summary

United Utilities is seeking a Drainage Delivery Engineer to act as custodian of the drainage for the Rochdale area. You will work with the Drainage Performance Engineer to monitor spend, drive improvements, and manage reactive work to prevent repeats.

The role requires an HNC in civil engineering, strong regulatory knowledge, and robust analytical and communication skills. The position is on-site at Rochdale WWTP with a generous benefits package.

Qualifications

• HNC in civil engineering or related subject is essential.
• Awareness of Confined Space Regulations 1997 with sewer operation knowledge.
• Understanding of sewerage law, CDM and NRSWA.
• Knowledge of pumping station operation and Ofwat regulations.
• Strong analytical, planning, budgeting and reporting skills.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement abilities.

Job description

The Role

To act as the custodian of the drainage for their respective area and will be responsible for improving the overall performance in collaboration with their respective Drainage Performance Engineer including monitoring operational spend and deciding on most cost effective solution, to enable proper network management.

To ensure reactive resolution and customer satisfaction identifying high risk needs which require further focus to prevent repeat. To champion resolution (within reason) to significantly reduce the volume of reactive work currently undertaken in their area.

In order to do this the Drainage Delivery Engineer will have to understand the day-to-day reactive work being undertaken in the Drainage area to drive improvement and prompt resolution, as well as working in collaboration with the Drainage Performance Engineer suggesting analysis of a range of performance / predictive data to proactively manage the network and enable proper network management.

What You Will Be Doing:

• Ensure full compliance with wastewater network policies, environmental regulations, and health & safety requirements.
• Improve drainage network performance by supporting planned maintenance, reducing flooding and pollution incidents, and enhancing customer satisfaction.
• Maintain accurate and reliable wastewater incident, asset, and sewer records to meet regulatory and operational standards.
• Proactively manage network issues by identifying repeat incidents, implementing preventative solutions, and responding to reactive work as needed.
• Provide technical expertise, stakeholder support, and investment recommendations while monitoring budgets and driving continuous asset improvement.

What We Are Looking For:

• HNC in civil engineering (or related subject) is essential.
• Awareness of Confined Space Regulations 1997 is essential with extensive knowledge and experience of day-to-day sewer operation and maintenance techniques.
• Good understanding of sewerage law and its practical implementation and good general knowledge of health and safety and other standards including CDM and NRSWA.
• Knowledge and experience of the principles of pumping station operation and excellent understanding of the regulatory contact with Ofwat.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, planning, and organisational skills, with the ability to manage budgets, prioritise workloads, work under pressure, and deliver results to deadlines.
• Excellent communication, stakeholder engagement, customer service, and teamwork capabilities, supported by strong reporting, presentation, IT, and network maintenance knowledge.
• Good understanding of Wastewater Network policies and procedures.

Full UK driving licence is required for this role.
