Job description

Domiciliary Support Worker
About Alexandra House Support Services

Alexandra House Support Services Ltd provides care and support to children and adults across North Wales.

Our services include domiciliary care, residential and respite care, and day services. We support individuals with a wide range of needs, including learning disabilities, autism, physical disabilities, complex health conditions and age-related care needs.

Our approach focuses on providing care that is safe, consistent and tailored to each individual's needs, preferences and circumstances. We recognise the importance of building trusting relationships, promoting independence and supporting people to maintain their daily routines and quality of life.

We are recruiting caring, reliable and responsible individuals to join our domiciliary care team.

About the Role

As a Domiciliary Care & Support Worker, you will provide practical and person-centred support to children and adults in their own homes and, where appropriate, within the community.

The individuals we support have varying levels of care needs. Some require assistance with everyday activities, personal care and household routines, while others need more specialised support due to learning disabilities, complex health conditions, mobility difficulties or additional behavioural and communication needs.

You will be expected to develop an understanding of each person's individual requirements and provide support in accordance with their care and support plans, risk assessments and agreed routines.

The role requires patience, good observation skills, professional judgement and the ability to adapt your approach to the needs of each individual.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide personal care, including assistance with washing, dressing, toileting, continence care and personal hygiene.

  • Support individuals with daily routines, meals, nutrition, hydration and everyday household activities.

  • Assist with medication in accordance with individual care plans, training, competency assessments and organisational procedures.

  • Support individuals with mobility, transfers and moving and handling, using appropriate equipment where required.

  • Provide support to individuals with learning disabilities, autism, complex health conditions and additional communication or behavioural needs.

  • Support children and adults to participate in meaningful activities and maintain their independence wherever possible.

  • Assist individuals to access appointments, community activities and social opportunities where appropriate.

  • Recognise and respond appropriately to changes in an individual's health, behaviour, presentation or wellbeing.

  • Follow individual care plans, risk assessments, safeguarding procedures and agreed support strategies.

  • Maintain accurate and timely care records using our electronic care management system.

  • Communicate effectively with individuals, families, colleagues, management and other professionals.

  • Maintain professional boundaries, confidentiality and respect for each individual's dignity, privacy and choices.

  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to maintain consistency and continuity of care.

Working Arrangements

Our domiciliary care service operates throughout the day, including mornings, evenings and weekends, to meet the needs of the individuals we support.

Applicants must be willing to work flexible shifts, including evenings and weekends on a rolling rota, in accordance with agreed working arrangements.

A full UK driving licence and access to your own vehicle for work purposes are essential requirements for this position. Appropriate business-use motor insurance will be required.

You will be expected to travel between individuals' homes and attend allocated care visits punctually.

Travel arrangements:

  • Paid travel time of up to 15 minutes between eligible care visits, subject to the organisation's terms and conditions.

  • Mileage reimbursement at 45p per mile for eligible work-related travel, subject to terms and conditions.

Training and Development

Successful applicants will receive induction and training relevant to their responsibilities and the needs of the individuals they support.

Training may include safeguarding adults and children, medication administration, moving and handling, infection prevention and control, positive behaviour support and other areas relevant to individual care needs.

Additional training and competency assessments will be provided where specific clinical or complex care responsibilities form part of the role.

Employees will be expected to participate in regular supervision, competency assessments and ongoing professional development, including relevant health and social care qualifications where appropriate.

Previous experience in care is desirable but not essential. We welcome applications from individuals who demonstrate the appropriate values, reliability and willingness to learn.

Safer Recruitment

Alexandra House Support Services is committed to safeguarding and promoting the wellbeing of children and adults receiving care and support.

All appointments are subject to appropriate pre-employment checks, including satisfactory references, an Enhanced DBS check with the relevant barred list checks where applicable, and verification of the applicant's right to work in the United Kingdom.

Who We Are Looking For

We are looking for individuals who understand that providing care is not simply about completing tasks, but about supporting people in a way that respects their individuality, promotes independence and maintains their dignity.

Successful applicants will be dependable, compassionate, observant and able to communicate effectively. They must be willing to follow care plans, accept guidance, maintain accurate records and take responsibility for the standard of care they provide.
