Job description

We are seeking a Divisional Director of Operations to join our leadership team and drive operational excellence across our organization.

In collaboration with the Divisional Medical Director and Divisional Director of Nursing, you will oversee the operational strategy, performance, and daily management of the Lewisham Medicine and Community Division, which includes urgent and emergency care, specialist medicine, and community services. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of successful NHS operational leadership, experience in divisional management, and the ability to manage complex, multidisciplinary teams and deliver results. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential to engage stakeholders and implement strategic plans.

The Lewisham Medicine and Community Division has demonstrated improvements across all performance metrics over the past two years. We seek a leader to continue this trajectory, guiding our teams into an innovative future for hospital and community services, with a focus on excellence within the organization and the wider system.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Chair the triumvirate leadership team to monitor performance, resource utilization, and ensure high-quality patient care and experience.
  2. Develop and communicate the clinical vision and strategy for the division, engaging staff and partners in its delivery, including short- and medium-term planning.
  3. Manage directorate teams within the division, ensuring clear structures, processes, and a focus on performance, support, and problem-solving.
  4. Provide professional and business leadership to clinical services, focusing on service planning and development.
  5. Ensure sound financial management, adhering to expenditure and income targets.
  6. Collaborate across divisions, with corporate teams, and external partners to foster an inclusive culture and develop leadership potential among staff.

Additional Leadership and Operational Responsibilities

  3. Develop leadership structures that unite operational, nursing, and medical leaders into cohesive teams.
  4. Oversee the division’s business plans, ensuring delivery of activity, quality, and financial targets.
  5. Ensure effective governance and accountability structures are in place.
  6. Lead operational management, performance monitoring, and service improvement initiatives.
  7. Coordinate site and service management, including capacity planning, incident response, and collaboration with support services.
  8. Engage in system-wide leadership, building external partnerships to improve patient pathways and service integration.

This role requires a dynamic, influential leader with a strategic mindset, capable of representing the trust positively internally and externally, and driving continuous improvement in patient care and operational efficiency.
