We have an exciting opportunity for a skilled and self-motivated individual to join the Disabled Facilities Grants team.

The primary role of a Disabled Facilities Grant Case Officer is to provide disabled facilities grants adaptations to homeowners, housing associations, and privately rented properties. This enables service users to remain in their homes which in turn reduces the demand on other council departments and external organisations.

You’ll be responsible for designing safe and cost-effective proposals whilst ensuring compliance with the Housing Grants, Construction and Regeneration Act 1996. In an extremely rewarding role, you’ll have the opportunity to make a vital difference to people, some of whom may be vulnerable.

What you’ll be doing:

  • You will be part of a team delivering a comprehensive and efficient Home Improvement Service in particular supporting our customers through the Disabled Facilities Grant process.
  • You will deal with customer’s enquiries offering advice, and process grant applications. You will also provide support to the team.
  • You must be IT literate and used to working in a customer focused environment. You will also have the ability to organise your work in a logical manner and prioritise workloads effectively in order to meet deadlines.
As part of a the team you’ll manage a case load of grant applications and your day-to-day activities will include, but not be limited to, Joint Feasibility Visits, site inspections and site meetings, measuring, recording, and controlling on-site contractors’ work to ensure the instructions of the Occupational Therapist are carried out and that the completed works meets the needs of the relevant person to enable them safe access to essential services within their own home as instructed by the Occupational Therapist.

You’ll be at the forefront of important decisions such as, initiating action to correct unsatisfactory work and advising on design aspects of a scheme to the appointed contractors on site during the adaptation process, this would involve but not limited to building methods and specifying materials to be used and enforcing Health and Safety and ensuring Risk and Method statements are being followed.

You’ll also be required to inspect and report and sign off on work undertaken, in Private owned Homes and Housing Associations, privately rented properties, external works or building sites.

What you’ll need:

  • With your experience and knowledge of buildings and maintenance, you’ll have practical knowledge of building industry regulations and health & safety. And will be able to work under pressure and prioritise tasks to meet agreed timescales. Using your own initiative as well as part of a team to work together and flexibly to achieve the service objectives you’ll communicate effectively at all levels.
  • With extensive knowledge of building construction, services, building regulations and health and safety legislation you’ll have sound organisational and planning skills, with a calm outlook, and an ability to utilise risk management. As someone who truly believes in great customer care, you’ll be able to prioritise your workloads. In addition, you’ll be able to provide expert guidance and support to customers and your team, to ensure cases are dealt with effectively.
As an organised individual, you’ll work well under pressure and hold the ability to prioritise competing tasks to meet agreed timescales and deadlines. In addition, you’ll be able to communicate well, both written and verbal and be able to communicate at all levels. You’ll also hold the literate and numerate skills sufficient to be able to write letters and compose reports and produce detailed Drawings and schedules for proposed Adaptation schemes and carry out tendering processes for each Adaptation.

Appointment to this role will be based on a full driving license check. You must have access to your own vehicle that you’ll use for work purposes.

Skills
  • To be able to undertake and facilitate holistic home assessments, providing independent technical advice and support.
  • Have the ability to remain customer focused when providing independent advice, negotiating with contractors, overseeing building works when agreeing contractual arrangements.
  • Demonstrable organisational ability, particularly self-organisation ability to see tasks through to a successful conclusion, whilst working to tight deadlines which often conflict.
  • To have a proven ability to make and/or foster strong working relationships with external contractors, occupational therapists, specialist equipment providers and health services.
  • To demonstrate empathy, initiative and integrity.
As this post meets the requirements of the Immigration Act 2016 (part 7), the ability to converse at ease with members of the public and provide advice in accurate spoken English is essential for the post.
Knowledge
  • To be able to understand of the needs of disabled clients whether that be through identifying their area of need such as rehousing, homecare or tele assistance and/or home improvements with ability to seek support and approval from Senior Disability Facilities Grant Officer.
  • Up to date knowledge of computer systems i.e. the ability to use software packages such as Microsoft Office (including Excel, Outlook, Word, Powerpoint, etc).
  • Demonstrate continually developing knowledge and skill for the benefit of the service.
Experience & Qualifications
  • Dealing effectively with a wide range of clients, contractors, occupational therapists, specialist equipment providers, health services and other internal stakeholders by email, telephone and in person.
  • Tenacity to ensure services and projects are delivered on time in a complex environment.
  • Experience of working with competing deadlines whilst meeting targets.
  • Experience of delivering a high level of customer service.
