Job summary

Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust is seeking a Directorate General Manager for Surgical Services for a 12-month fixed-term maternity cover. Responsibilities

• Provide senior operational leadership and autonomous decision-making for day-to-day service delivery.
• Maintain performance on RTT, cancer, diagnostic standards; act early if off track.
• Lead on theatre productivity and utilisation.
• Drive transformation, service redesign and productivity improvements.
• Troubleshoot complex operational issues with clinical and managerial colleagues.
• Oversee workforce, financial and governance performance, including savings and risk management.
• Develop clinical partnerships and contribute to strategic planning and future service development.
• Build relationships across the Trust and with external partners to influence change.

Job description

This is a 12-month fixed-term maternity cover post as Directorate General Manager for Surgical Services at Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust. The job-holder provides senior operational leadership across a range of surgical specialties, owning day-to-day delivery and performance against access, cancer and diagnostic standards, theatre productivity, workforce, finance and governance. The post carries wide influence over directorate and Trust priorities, including service redesign with clinical partners. Candidates need substantial acute line management experience and a track record of leading transformational projects.

What the job involves

• Provide senior operational leadership across the directorate, making autonomous decisions and ensuring day-to-day service delivery
• Maintain grip on performance against RTT, cancer, diagnostic and other Trust and national standards, acting early where delivery is off track
• Lead on theatre productivity and utilisation
• Lead transformation, service redesign and productivity improvement to improve patient flow, quality and efficiency
• Troubleshoot complex operational issues with clinical and managerial colleagues
• Oversee workforce, financial and governance performance, including savings and risk management
• Develop clinical partnerships and contribute to strategic planning and future service development
• Build relationships across the Trust and with external partners to influence change

What’s required

Qualifications

• Educated to degree level or equivalent
• Management or leadership qualification, or evidence of relevant experience
• Postgraduate diploma or equivalent

Experience

• Substantial line or general management experience in acute services, covering staff management, budget responsibility, performance targets, waiting list management and discharge arrangements
• Proven project management experience of transformational change

• Masters qualification, or in process of obtaining one
