Job summary

Jagex, based in Cambridge, UK, is seeking an Associate Technical Director for the Player Platform team. You will steer technical direction across website, launcher, payments, and accounts, guiding Lead Engineers and owning cross-functional delivery with emphasis on scalability and resilience.

You will lead architecture across web, backend and cloud infrastructure, balancing debt, cost and capability while mentoring leaders and aligning with product strategy.

Qualifications

• Significant experience leading multiple engineering teams to deliver and operate complex, business critical software systems.
• Proven experience managing and developing senior technical leaders, with accountability for performance, succession, workforce planning and raising engineering capability.
• Strong track record of defining technical strategy, establishing and evolving engineering standards, and turning strategic direction into clear, measurable technical objectives.
• Demonstrable experience guiding the architecture and evolution of complex systems, including integration with legacy platforms and modern tech.
• Expert technical knowledge within a relevant engineering domain, with hands-on experience in Java/Spring Boot, TypeScript/React, AWS/EKS, Terraform, and microservices.
• Proven ability to communicate technical options, trade-offs and risks clearly to technical and non-technical audiences, including managing external partners.
• Games industry experience is not essential; open to leaders from complex enterprise environments.

Responsibilities

• Define the technical strategy for the area with senior leadership and translate it into actionable objectives for Lead Engineers.
• Guide architecture and evolution of complex systems across payments, accounts, web, and launcher, balancing scalability and cost.
• Own engineering standards and ensure they are embedded in day-to-day work.
• Mentor Lead Engineers and grow teams with clear objectives and feedback.
• Translate product vision into high-level technical options and communicate risks effectively.
• Own lifecycle of technology from evaluation to decommissioning, including budget for SaaS and outsourcing.
• Manage relationships with external engineering partners to meet quality and delivery standards.
• Be the domain expert and promote knowledge sharing to avoid single points of failure.
