Job summary

Jagex in Cambridge, UK, seeks an Associate Technical Director for the Player Platform to steer technical direction across payments, accounts, and launcher. You will guide senior engineers, shape platform architecture, and own standard setting for high-impact systems with a focus on scalability and resilience.

You will collaborate with product and business leaders to translate visions into concrete technical options, manage lifecycle decisions, and mentor leadership within teams.

Qualifications

• Significant experience leading multiple engineering teams to deliver complex software systems.
• Experience managing senior technical leaders and performance/succession planning.
• Proven track record defining technical strategy and turning it into measurable objectives.
• Demonstrable guidance of architecture for modern systems alongside legacy platforms.
• Hands-on engineering proximity with a strong knowledge of Java/Spring Boot, TypeScript/React, AWS with EKS, Terraform, and microservices.
• Able to communicate complex options and risks to both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Experience managing external engineering partners or suppliers.
• Games industry experience isn’t essential; enterprise-grade practices welcomed.

Responsibilities

• Define the technical strategy for your area with senior leadership and translate into actionable OKRs for teams.
• Guide architecture and evolution of complex systems across payments, accounts, web, launcher, and related services.
• Own engineering principles and standards, embedding them in day-to-day work and reporting exceptions.
• Grow Lead Engineers through coaching and clear objectives to raise overall capability.
• Collaborate with product and business leaders to translate vision into technical options and risks.
• Own full technology lifecycle from procurement to decommissioning, including SaaS budgets.
• Manage outsourced engineering partners to meet quality and delivery standards.
• Be the domain expert, championing quality across web, backend, test, and cloud infrastructure.
