Job description

Director of Policy, Influence and Change

Our goal is to build health equity so that everyone living in urban areas has a fair and just opportunity to thrive and live in good health.

The Director of Policy, Influencing and Change will lead our efforts to shape policy, influence practice, and channel resources towards effective approaches to advancing health equity. This includes spreading and scaling our proven projects and ensuring our work has a wider impact.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Policy, Influencing and Change
  2. Strategic leadership of IoUH Policy and Influencing: Delivering and evolving the Policy & Influencing strategy that embeds policy and influencing into all IoUH’s programmes and work, overseeing effective execution by the Policy & Influencing Team.
  3. Strategic leadership of IoUH Change function: Responsible for a strategic approach to partnerships focused on scaling and sustaining effective initiatives. Overseeing delivery of projects operating at scale and being replicated, influencing local and national policy making and co-funding partnerships.
  4. Impact delivery: Overseeing the development and delivery of strategies to support IoUH in achieving strategic aims and impact goals, including influencing decision-making, policy debate, and stakeholder practices.
  5. Stakeholder engagement and thought leadership: Managing IoUH’s external presence in collaboration with the Director of Communications. Ensuring strong relationships with key stakeholders such as Government, Parliament, local councils, the Greater London Authority, funders, and policy organizations to support scaling effective approaches and policy change. Embedding good stakeholder management practices within teams.
  6. Thought leadership: Acting as a subject matter expert and representing IoUH externally as a leader in urban health and health equity.
  7. Champion inclusive leadership and be an active member of IoUH’s Director’s Team.
  8. Line management of the Partnership Manager, Head of Policy & Influencing, and dotted line to Portfolio Managers responsible for scaled programmes.
  9. Other responsibilities to ensure successful role delivery.
Corporate responsibilities
  • Ensure consistency and identify synergies across policy and influencing work, leveraging insights to influence policy and key audiences.
  • Meet governance and accountability standards, including monitoring, evaluating, and reporting on impact.

  • Experience embedding DEI principles and fostering inclusive environments.
  • Comfort navigating uncertainty and complexity.
