Job description

This is a partially remote position, with expectation to be in the required location for board meetings.

An opportunity has arisen for a values-driven Director of Governance, to provide strategic leadership across four critical functions: Governance & Company Secretariat, Legal Services, Risk & Compliance, and Regulatory Assurance. As a key member of the senior leadership team, you will play a pivotal role in maintaining organisational integrity, transparency and accountability while supporting the delivery of strategic priorities.

About the role

This senior leadership position provides strategic oversight of governance, legal and compliance frameworks. The role advises the Executive and Boards, oversees relationships with regulators such as the Regulator of Social Housing, FCA and Charity Commission, and ensures the organisation meets and exceeds all legal, regulatory and ethical obligations.

You will lead a portfolio that safeguards effective risk management, drives assurance, and enables informed decision‑making across the business.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Championing regulatory compliance and embedding good governance across all areas of operation.
  • Leading the design and continuous improvement of governance, risk, legal and assurance frameworks.
  • Providing strategic oversight of legal services and compliance reporting.
  • Acting as a senior advisor on regulatory engagement and external policy development.
  • Driving a culture of integrity, risk awareness and high performance.
  • Developing and empowering high‑performing teams that deliver excellence across complex portfolios.
What we’re looking for:
  • Extensive senior experience in governance, legal, risk and compliance leadership.
  • Proven track record working with Boards, Committees and Executive teams.
  • Strong knowledge of the UK housing or regulated sector, and relevant legislation (including company, charity and data protection law).
  • Background in managing multi‑functional teams, large budgets, and cross‑organisational assurance frameworks.
  • A Chartered Governance qualification (CGIUKI) or equivalent senior governance qualification is desirable.

This is a high‑impact role requiring advanced judgement, strategic influence and the ability to navigate complex regulatory environments. It offers the opportunity to shape governance integrity and compliance culture at the highest level.
