Director | Capital Markets | Economic & Financial Consulting

FTI Consulting is the leading global expert firm for organizations facing crisis and transformation. We work with many of the world’s top multinational corporations, law firms, banks and private equity firms on their most important issues to deliver impact that makes a difference. From resolving disputes, navigating crises, managing risk and optimizing performance, our teams respond rapidly to dynamic and complex situations.

At FTI Consulting, you’ll work side-by-side with leaders who have shaped history, helping solve the biggest challenges making headlines today. From day one, you’ll be an integral part of a focused team where you can make a real impact. You’ll be surrounded by an open, collaborative culture that embraces diversity, recognition, professional development and, most importantly, you.

Are you ready to make your impact?

About EFC

Our EFC practice sits within the Economic Consulting segment, which provides law firms, companies, government entities and other interested parties with analyses of complex economic issues for use in international arbitration, legal and regulatory proceedings, and strategic decision making and public policy debates around the world.

This role sits within EFC’s Capital Markets Services team, which assists clients with expertise in the trading, risk management, derivative valuation and investment management across all energy and financial asset classes, including equity, foreign exchange, fixed income, credit, commodities and energy.

The team serves a wide range of market participants globally in special and complex situations, for example:

  1. Valuation and Risk management (e.g., valuation of derivatives, financial instruments or bespoke structures with embedded optionality, such as energy supply contracts or PPAs; market/credit/liquidity/operational risk management or management of bespoke complex risk in niche markets, such as weather risks)
  2. Disputes, Litigation & Arbitration (i.e., independent or party appointed expert witness)
  3. Investigations (e.g., rogue trading, market manipulation, best execution)
  4. Support to companies in special situations (e.g., restructuring, transactions)

We operate a very flat structure and encourage creative thinking to solve some of the most complex problems companies face. We do not use a template approach; our solutions are bespoke, and we take pride in delivering high-quality work products.

About The Role

The Director role is a key role within the team: they are responsible for project managing parts of engagements, directing project teams, providing key technical inputs into all analyses and drafting deliverables to clients:

  • Directors have a central role on projects, taking day-to-day responsibility for delivery, organisation of the work into streams, and the effective use of Consultants or Senior Consultants. Typically, Directors will develop, with other senior project team members, the approach to projects, or parts of large projects, and are responsible for anticipating, identifying and resolving issues and keeping senior team members informed of progress.
  • Directors are responsible for the preparation of formal reports, including their structure and content.
  • Directors will develop and manage a network of professional relationships with clients and others.

In addition, Directors are expected to help develop client proposals and take part in business development activities, for example giving presentations and attending networking events.

How You Will Grow

We are committed to investing and supporting you in your professional development and we have developed a range of programs focused on fostering leadership, growth and development opportunities. We aim to promote continuous learning and individual skills development through on-the-job learning, self-guided professional development courses and certifications. You’ll be assigned a dedicated coach to mentor, guide and support you through regular coaching sessions and serve as an advocate for your professional growth.

As you progress through your career at FTI Consulting, we offer tailored programs for critical professional milestones to ensure you are prepared and empowered to take on your next role.

What You Will Need to Succeed

Suitable candidates will be problem-solvers who enjoy developing and applying bespoke approaches to solve complex, unstructured problems in a logical manner. Candidates will have strong (verbal and written) communication skills and excellent analytical skills; be able to draw upon considerable experience of applying principles to solve problems in practice. The ideal candidate will have an eye for both the big picture and the fine detail.

The qualifications and experiences that we typically look for in Director candidates:

  1. BA/BSc, MSc, PhD in a quantitative discipline; preferred candidates will have a post-graduate qualification and/or relevant professional qualifications (e.g. CFA, CQF, FRM);
  2. 5 to 8 years of relevant work experience in quantitative modelling, derivative valuation or risk management roles in energy markets (e.g., utility, oil & gas company, banking, consulting); and
  3. Prior work experience in an advisory capacity and/or delivering projects in a contentious context (e.g., litigation, arbitration, investigations) is a plus, but not essential.

In addition, the following knowledge and competencies are desired:

  • a good understanding of financial instruments and derivatives valuation and/or risk management techniques in one or more energy markets (e.g., natural gas, LNG, power, oil, environmental certificates);
  • experience in energy markets essential, further experience in other asset classes (e.g., equity, FX, credit) is a plus;
  • familiarity with energy market regulation is considered an advantage;
  • the capacity to critically evaluate and compare different sources of information and assumptions to assess reliability;
  • the ability to develop and apply robust methods to address complex economic and/or financial issues;
  • the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, meeting deadlines whilst having to rely on inputs provided by others;
  • the ability to communicate effectively and authoritatively, verbally and in writing, both internally and with clients;
  • the ability to report and interact with all levels in an organisation (finance, legal, marketing, operations, IT);
  • proficiency in MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint;
  • working programming knowledge particularly in Python and potentially in other languages (e.g., R, C++);
  • working knowledge of market data systems (e.g., Bloomberg, Thomson Reuters, ICIS).

Our goal is to support the wellbeing of you and your families—physically, emotionally, and financially. We offer market competitive benefits (including pension), supplemented by 15 flexible benefits, to meet your needs. These include health, lifestyle and family friendly options. We also offer professional development programme, wellness, recognition, community volunteering initiatives, and flexible/hybrid working arrangements.
