The Opportunity

Do you want to help keep our future fighter pilots safe by designing the next generation of airborne communications equipment?

Leonardo offers a fantastic opportunity for an Electronic Design Engineer to deliver an Inter-Vehicle Data Link communications system. We seek an engineer with digital design experience, familiar with complex electronic sensor systems, preferably RF communication based.

The role focuses on designing digital subsystems interfacing with RF and control systems, implemented on laboratory and aircraft demonstrators.

You will provide technical support throughout the product lifecycle, including design, integration, testing, system trials, and delivery.

You will be part of Leonardo's Airborne Communications product development group within the Integrated Sensing & Protection business line, collaborating with partners, subcontractors, and customers.

What you will do

Responsible for digital electronics work packages, including inter-vehicle data link design, system testing, and integration.

  • Create boards supporting AESA antennas, focusing on digital control design.
  • Support PCB layout engineers.
  • Design RF over fibre modules, fibre Ethernet interfaces, and other external interfaces.
  • Collaborate with the antenna design team in Bristol.
What we are looking for:

You really must have:

  • Experience designing printed circuit board assemblies, from schematic to documentation and support for PCB layout.
  • Support experience for embedded software/firmware teams, peer reviews, and system integration.
  • Practical design experience, lab work, PCB bring-up, fault-finding, and testing reports.
  • Knowledge of signal & power integrity, EMC, grounding practices.
  • Ability to produce technical reports on design solutions.
  • Understanding of design reviews and high-tech defence environment practices.
  • Degree in Electronics Engineering, Physics, or related.
  • Ability to make technical decisions within your scope.

Design activities include:

  • Mixed-technology PCBA designs with MCU, CPLD, FPGA, RF components.
  • Digital interface PCBAs with Ethernet, CAN, I2C, SPI, RS422, optical fibre interfaces.
  • Power and control boards requiring high safety ratings and DO-160 qualification.
It would be nice if you had:
  • Experience with requirements management (DOORS).
  • Designing to meet DO-254.
  • Use of Mentor (Siemens EDA) Designer, LTSpice.
  • Knowledge of analogue and RF design.
  • System integration and debugging experience.
  • Experience in defence electronics sector.
  • Experience working with UK MOD agencies.
  • Understanding of airborne military platform deployment.

The role requires UK SC security clearance and access to sensitive information.
