Job summary

The Open University’s Centre for Electronic Imaging seeks a Detector Data Engineer to design readout and data handling for CIS300 detectors, interfacing with on-board processing and achieving efficient data products for space missions and laboratory tests.

You will collaborate with detector scientists, electronics engineers and FPGA/software developers, using Python and C/C++, HDL for FPGA development, and build data acquisition pipelines.

Qualifications

  • BSc (2:1 or above) in Physics, Electronic/Space/Computer Engineering or closely related discipline.
  • Good understanding of detector data readout, data acquisition or data handling systems.
  • Experience with HDR/read-up-the-ramp or non-destructive readout techniques.
  • Experience debugging detector/instrumentation issues with lab measurements and test equipment.
  • Experience with FPGA development (VHDL/Verilog) or interfacing with FPGA-based systems.
  • Proficiency in scientific software development in Python and/or C/C++ for data processing of large datasets.
  • Experience with Git in collaborative software projects.
  • Ability to write software from first principles without relying on AI tools.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop data readout and output methodology for CIS300 detectors.
  • Interface detector modes with on-board data processing systems and define data formats and rates.
  • Develop and maintain software/firmware tools for detector data acquisition, processing and analysis.
  • Support calibration data management for space missions like SMILE.
  • Collaborate with CEI teams to meet programmatic timescales and report progress.
