Job Description:
Information Technology provides and supports all central University IT services and is responsible for the institution's Technical Infrastructure. In addition to this service and support provision, IT develops systems to support the business requirements of the organisation.
The build and lifecycle management of the client hardware and devices are part of the Client Systems Team within the Infrastructure Products Team responsible for the administration, management and support of managed endpoints and the associated infrastructure for the Open University.
Information Technology are seeking a Desktop Technician. To provide configuration, installation, and deployment for all desktop technologies (to include desktop PCs, portable workstations, telephony, Apple Macintosh, mobile devices, printers, and multi-function devices (printer/copier/scanner)) to all staff across the University, both on campus and off-site locations including home-based workers.
The role is responsible for accurate booking in of all Configuration Items (CIs) under the remit of IT.
• Taking receipt of all assets received by the University that fall under the remit of IT; creating and updating records for all Configuration Items (CIs) on the Configuration Management Database (CMDB). Reporting to the Lifecycle Manager any discrepancies on orders for investigation within the IT Lifecycle Team.
• Ensure the accuracy of asset information held within central IT systems to ensure that there is a full audit trail of CIs from initial creation to allocation to Desktop Support or the Business.
• To respond to requests for IT support from business areas via procurement request, service request and email, ensuring that the appropriate image is installed to match the request. Ensure equipment is returned within agreed timescales, escalating where necessary.
• Ensure swap out devices and returns are wiped and rebuilt for deployment.
• Monitor equipment returns to ensure that all 'End of Life' assets are processed for disposal according to procedure.
• Request quotes for non-warranty equipment from suppliers and deem beyond economical repair (BER) where necessary. Install and fix parts as required ensuring that units are charged appropriately through IT Procurement. Log call outs for hardware under warranty through third party suppliers.
• To ensure a safe working environment and that health and safety policies and direction are adhered to at all times.
Essential
Education, qualifications, and training
• Evidence an appropriate level of work experience in a comparable role.
Knowledge work and other relevant experience
• Good technical understanding of computer systems hardware technologies employed in the IT infrastructure.
• Ability to understand and relay technical information to a lay audience.
• Sound understanding of the process and procedures required to perform the role.
• Experience in a Stores environment.
• Experience of break fix.
• Proven record of working within a team environment and achievement within an operational environment.
Desirable
• Experience of working in a Desktop Support environment.
• Experience of staff management.
• Experience of Finance and Procurement.

• Good interpersonal skills and ability to deal with staff at all levels.
• Excellent team player.
• Pro-active approach to the identification of incidents/problems.
• Ability to maintain a high level of expertise regarding appropriate technologies, both hardware and software.

• The post may require some lifting of IT equipment.

• Ability to use own judgement, based upon clear understanding of IT requirements.
• Ability to liaise confidently at all levels (e.g Managers, IT Specialists, users etc).

It is anticipated that a hybrid working pattern can be adopted for this role, where the successful candidate can work from home and the office. However, as this role is contractually aligned to our Milton Keynes office it is expected that some attendance in the office will be required when necessary and in response to business needs. We anticipate this being twice per month on average.
