Design Manager Responsibilities
- Lead projects through the design phase for a portfolio of water and wastewater projects, ensuring solutions are technically compliant, cost-effective, buildable, and aligned with stakeholder requirements.
- Manage and coordinate multi-disciplinary design teams to ensure project objectives are delivered to agreed quality, cost, and programme targets.
- Champion Health & Safety throughout the design process, ensuring compliance with CDM regulations, industry standards, and all relevant legislation.
- Identify and manage design-related risks and ensure residual risks are effectively communicated to all project stakeholders.
- Manage design budgets and resources, ensuring deliverables are produced within allocated hours and key project milestones.
- Develop and maintain Design Management Plans and provide regular progress and status reports.
- Attend and contribute to programme, project, client, and technical meetings.
- Drive value-led engineering solutions that optimise cost, quality, sustainability, and programme delivery.
- Provide technical support during construction, installation, commissioning, and project handover stages.
- Ensure all design activities are carried out in accordance with approved procedures, specifications, quality standards, and engineering best practice.
- Support sustainability objectives by reducing embodied and operational carbon within design solutions.
- Build strong working relationships with clients, partners, suppliers, and internal teams to deliver successful project outcomes.
- Promote a positive, collaborative, and solution-focused culture across project teams.
Design Manager Requirements
- Degree qualified in an Engineering or related discipline.
- Chartered Engineer status within a relevant engineering discipline.
- APM Project Fundamentals Qualification (PFQ).
- Extensive experience in multi-disciplinary design management within a design-and-build environment.
- Proven track record of delivering large-scale infrastructure or water sector projects.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and manage multi-disciplinary teams.
- Excellent understanding of CDM regulations and construction Health & Safety requirements.
- Strong strategic, operational, technical, and commercial awareness.
- Good understanding of water and wastewater treatment processes, civil engineering, and MEICA disciplines.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to present technical solutions confidently to clients and stakeholders.
Desirable
- APM Project Management Qualification or working towards achieving it.
- Experience working within a global organisation.
- Experience managing remote or geographically dispersed teams.
- Previous experience within the Water and Wastewater Treatment Industry.
- Knowledge of BIM procedures, standards, and techniques.
- Experience driving collaborative and innovative project delivery approaches.
