Overview

This Design Manager position requires a senior-level design professional with specific experience in 33kv to 132kv design and team leadership. Some hybrid working arrangements are available, with part of the week working from our client's Northeast office and the rest from home.

Our client seeks to appoint a Design Manager to enable full delivery of their schemes and contracts. They are looking for an innovative, passionate, and industry-experienced professional to work on multiple projects from initial concept and feasibility through to procurement, construction, and commissioning. The successful candidate will lead a multi-faceted design team working on critical grid and primary substation projects.

Our Client

Responsible for the construction, maintenance, renewal, refurbishment, and repair of electricity transmission and distribution networks, assets, and systems, including substations, overhead lines, underground cables, and associated plant and equipment such as switchgear and transformers.

The Role

  • Manage all aspects of design from outline to detail during the project lifecycle, including design, planning, approval, construction, commissioning, and handover.
  • Experience in 33kV to 132kV design and development.
  • Approve pre-manufacturing drawings and ensure compliance with specifications.
  • Sign off on protection studies, ensuring systems are secure and reliable.
  • Design and approve block cable diagrams, set files, and key line diagrams.
  • Collaborate closely with Project Managers, Construction Managers, Engineers, and the Design Team to meet project objectives on time, within budget, and with quality standards.
  • Ensure business processes and systems are optimized for maximum performance.
  • Develop project designs within agreed timelines and manage within budgets and schedules.
  • Willingness to travel and participate in site meetings as necessary.
  • Manage third-party design resources and a team of Design Engineers with varying experience levels.

The Person

  • Possess an HNC or equivalent qualification.
  • Hold a full UK driving license and be willing to travel locally.
  • Ability to allocate technical elements of projects to team members and external providers.
  • Be the customer focal point for technical aspects of projects.
  • Expertise in the design or management of 33kV to 132kV projects.
  • Understanding of major plant items like transformers and circuit breakers.
  • Experience in signing off protection and control designs, including specifications.
  • Strong electrical engineering design and practices knowledge.
  • Knowledge of the electricity distribution business in a leadership role.
  • Experience with CDM regulations for utility projects.
  • Proficiency in planning and designing various schemes across applications.
  • Experience in procurement and approval of pre-manufacturing drawings.
  • Ability to design and draw block cable diagrams, set files, and key line diagrams.
  • Working knowledge of ETAP, DigSilent (or similar), and AutoCAD.
