Job Title: Design Manager

Reporting to: Business Unit General Manager

Role purpose

The Design Manager for the Business Unit will be responsible for the production, delivery, and assurance of protection and control schematics from 11kV up to 400kV, including associated LVAC & DC systems.

Responsibilities & Duties

Including but not limited to the following:

  • Responsible for selecting equipment and detailed electrical protection design to meet relevant standards and client requirements.
  • Ensure the complete design package, including interface design, is fully approved prior to site installation and commissioning.
  • Produce and approve Design Intent Documents and Functional Design Specifications.
  • Support the tendering department to propose technically compliant and cost-effective solutions.
  • Develop design risk assessments for all solutions, ensuring all risks and HAZIDS are identified and controlled, complying with health and safety legislation.
  • Coordinate and attend Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) with the client.
  • Mentor and develop less experienced team members.
  • Lead a team of engineers to deliver projects on time, within budget, and to customer requirements.
  • Maintain design consistency across contracts by adhering to company processes.
  • Attend technical meetings with clients across Ireland and the UK.

Person Specification
Qualifications and experience

The candidate must be a motivated self-starter with:

  • A relevant third-level or professional qualification.
  • At least 6 years of design experience in the Electricity Supply industry, with a solid understanding of electrical power engineering design principles.
  • Familiarity with the latest Transmission and Distribution standards and technologies.
  • Experience in designing LVAC and DC systems for High Voltage Substations.
  • Experience with setting and configuring numerical protection relays.
  • Good knowledge of HV Substation Primary Plant up to 400kV.
  • Knowledge of HV Substation/Windfarm control systems, including IEC 61850 applications.
  • Understanding of Health & Safety regulations related to HV substations.
  • Ability to act as Lead Design Engineer, coordinating with primary and civil design disciplines.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and team management skills.
  • Strong commercial awareness to identify opportunities for maximizing return while ensuring customer satisfaction.
