BMSL Group Ltd is recruiting a Design Manager for its Bridgend operation in South Wales. The role leads multidisciplinary design activities for major infrastructure, water, energy, and civil projects across Wales and the UK, driving technical excellence from concept to delivery.

You will collaborate with Pre-Construction, Engineering and Operational teams, own the design process from feasibility to tender and handover, ensure buildable, commercially viable solutions, and lead design teams to

Qualifications

• Degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline.
• Full UK driving licence.
• Proficiency in CAD, BIM and Civil 3D software.
• Experience delivering civil infrastructure projects.

Responsibilities

• Lead and coordinate multidisciplinary design teams across civil, structural, mechanical, electrical and environmental disciplines.
• Manage the design development from feasibility through to detailed design and delivery.
• Support bids, tenders and framework submissions with the Pre-Construction team.
• Drive value engineering and technical risk reduction initiatives.
• Ensure designs meet programme, budget, quality and compliance requirements.
• Coordinate internal teams, consultants, subcontractors and supply chain partners.
• Provide technical leadership during client and stakeholder meetings.
• Develop innovative and sustainable engineering solutions.
• Manage design risk and compliance with standards and client requirements.
• Contribute to continuous improvement and best practice.

We're recruiting for a Design Manager to join a highly successful contractor delivering major infrastructure, water, energy and civil engineering projects across Wales and the wider UK.

Ideal for candidates from either a design consultancy or contractor background who are looking to influence major projects, lead multidisciplinary teams and develop innovative, buildable engineering solutions.

The Role

As Design Manager, you'll work closely with Pre-Construction, Engineering and Operational teams to lead the development, coordination and delivery of complex infrastructure projects.

You'll take ownership of the design process from early feasibility and concept development through to tender submission and project handover, ensuring solutions are technically robust, commercially viable and fully aligned with project objectives.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and coordinate multidisciplinary design teams across civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, environmental and temporary works disciplines.
• Manage the design development process from feasibility through to detailed design and delivery.
• Collaborate with Pre-Construction teams to support bids, tenders and framework submissions.
• Drive buildability reviews, value engineering and technical risk reduction initiatives.
• Ensure designs meet programme, budget, quality and compliance requirements.
• Coordinate internal teams, consultants, subcontractors and supply chain partners to achieve integrated project solutions.
• Provide technical leadership during client and stakeholder meetings.
• Support the development of innovative and sustainable engineering solutions.
• Manage design risk and ensure compliance with relevant standards, regulations and client requirements.
• Contribute to continuous improvement and the adoption of best practice across the business.

What We're Looking For

• Experience managing design on civil engineering, infrastructure or design-and-build projects.
• Strong understanding of the complete project lifecycle from concept design through to delivery.
• Experience leading multidisciplinary design teams.
• Good commercial awareness and understanding of project risk.
• Strong stakeholder management and communication skills.
• Ability to develop practical, buildable and value-driven engineering solutions.
• Experience working within either a consultancy or contractor environment.

Essential Qualifications & Experience

• Degree or equivalent qualification in Civil Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
• Full UK Driving Licence.
• Proficiency in CAD, BIM and Civil 3D software.
• Strong understanding of civil engineering design and construction processes.

Highly Desirable

• Infrastructure, water, utilities or energy sector experience.
• Experience undertaking feasibility studies, options appraisals and concept design.
• Broad understanding of multiple engineering disciplines including Mechanical, Electrical and Process Engineering.
• Chartered or Incorporated status with ICE, CIWEM or similar, or actively working towards professional accreditation.
• Temporary Works experience.
• Experience within a design-and-build environment.
