Job summary

Hall&Kay Fire Engineering in the Birmingham region is seeking a design engineer to lead sprinkler system design on Main Contract projects. You will coordinate with client representatives and other service contracts to develop a complete design.

You will produce fully designed working drawings with hydraulic calculations, manage procurement lists, and attend site meetings as needed. Proficiency in AutoCAD and Revit 3D, plus knowledge of NFPA and FM standards, are required.

Qualifications

  • Extensive experience in sprinkler design engineering.
  • Strong knowledge of LPC BS EN 12845.
  • LPCB Intermediate and LPCB Full Hydraulic Calculation qualifications desirable.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD; Revit 3D desirable.
  • Experience with Canute hydraulic calculations desirable.
  • Knowledge of Factory Mutual Standards.
  • Knowledge of NFPA standards.
  • HND or Degree in construction/engineering design.
  • Experience in managing and leading a team.
  • Willingness to travel and occasional nights away.

Responsibilities

  • Design sprinkler systems through coordination with clients and other service contracts.
  • Monitor design programme against construction schedule and specification.
  • Prepare and issue completion documents and certificates.
  • Gather information for fully designed drawings from site, architects, consultants and other trades.
  • Attend site meetings to discuss design matters as needed.
  • Prepare working drawings with hydraulic calculations.
  • List materials for procurement and estimate variations.
  • Forward drawings and material lists to suppliers and manage procurement.

Job description

Summary of Role

Working in a team within the H&K Birmingham regional office you will be instrumental in the design and program of sprinkler systems working on various sectors on Main Contract projects.

What you will be doing
  • Develop the design of the sprinkler system through a process of co-ordination with client representatives and other service contracts through to a final scheme.
  • Contribute to the design programme by monitoring same against the construction programme and specification requirements.
  • Issue all completion documents and certification.
  • Obtain all necessary information from all relevant parties for the preparation of fully designed working drawings including site, architects, consultants, builders and other trades.
  • Attend site meetings independently, when necessary, where design matters are on the agenda.
  • Preparation of complete working drawings in accordance with the appropriate design codes including establishing pipe sizes by hydraulic calculations.
  • From design drawings, list off materials for various purposes including material procurement, estimating of variations, schedule of rates etc.
  • Forward drawings / quantities of materials listed to suppliers / subcontractors for procurement purposes. Also, order materials and monitor and maintain levels of equipment.
  • Other activities as instructed by the Project manager / Design Manager.
  • Familiarise & comply with all company policies & procedures.
What we will need from you
  • Comprehensive experience in a design engineering role within the sprinkler industry (essential)
  • Comprehensive knowledge and familiarity with LPC BS EN 12845 rule (essential)
  • LPCB Intermediate qualification & LPCB Full Hydraulic Calculation qualification (highly desirable)
  • Experience and proficiency in using Autocad (essential). Revit 3D experience (highly desirable).
  • Experience and proficiency in Full Hydraulic Calculation software ideally Canute (desirable)
  • Knowledge of Factory Mutual Standards (essential)
  • Knowledge of NFPA standards (highly desirable)
  • HND or Degree qualification in a construction/engineering design related topic (highly desirable)
  • Experience of managing, developing, mentoring and leading a team.
  • Some flexibility will be required in terms of travel and working hours as there will be occasional nights away from home.
