Solar Careers UK, a division of Solar Energy UK, represents over 425 solar businesses. We are assisting in recruiting full-time, permanent installation teams across the UK.

The Design Engineer will work in the renewable energy sector, focusing on the design and review of Solar PV plants and Electrical Energy Storage Systems (EESS).

Responsibilities:

• Design, review, and documentation of systems per relevant standards (ISO, IEC, BS, IET PV CoP, BS 7671 18th Edition)
• Developing customer-specific PV concepts, detailed designs, and yield simulations
• Authorizing and reviewing Low Voltage (LV), Single Line Diagrams (SLD), and schematics
• Design and review of electrical protection schemes
• Assessing grid compliance, earthing reports, and appointing consultants
• Designing LV electrical equipment, including UPS, cables, meters, CTs, switchgear, transformers, inverters
• Liaising with manufacturers and technical advisors
• Cable sizing, optimization, and issuing procurement schedules
• Analyzing topographical and utility survey data for system design
• Designing within planning and flood risk constraints, supporting planning applications
• Evaluating technical options for mounting systems and modules considering local conditions
• Ensuring design compliance with engineering and planning standards
• Providing technical support during sales, procurement, construction, and implementation phases
• Communicating with DNO, procurement, operations, legal, and project teams
• Designing and reviewing earthing systems and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)
• Issuing operational instructions and maintaining document control
• Designing energy monitoring systems and interpreting relevant standards
• Performing engineering calculations, data analysis, and preparing reports
• Conducting site surveys and inspections, reviewing As-Built documents

Requirements:

Experience:

• Design experience in commercial or utility-scale Solar PV systems
• Knowledge of inverter specs, array sizing, yield optimization, and component assessment
• Proficiency in electrical system design (HV, LV, AC, DC), SCADA, communications
• Understanding of ENA recommendations (P28, G59/G99, G100) and solutions to meet them
• Familiarity with electrical design software for cable sizing and protection
• Experience with AutoCAD, PYSyst/PVSol, MS Office (Excel, Outlook, SharePoint)

Education:

• Undergraduate degree in STEM, ideally Electrical Engineering, or equivalent experience/certifications
• Membership in a professional body (e.g., Chartered Engineer) is desirable
