Job summary

Balfour Beatty Living Places is seeking a Design Engineer in Cambridge to join our Street Lighting Division. You will deliver high-quality lighting designs for new and existing developments across Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire, reporting to the Regional Senior Engineer.

You will apply technical expertise, support operations, customers and stakeholders, and contribute to innovative solutions that improve communities and infrastructure.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of UK street lighting and highways design standards.
  • Experience with lighting design software and technical calculations.
  • CDM Regulations and Health & Safety awareness.
  • EngTech or working towards IEng is desirable.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver on time.
  • Proactive approach with focus on continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Produce accurate street lighting designs, calculations, reviews and approvals.
  • Develop lighting solutions for new and existing developments per standards and client requirements.
  • Review design briefs and technical approvals.
  • Provide technical support to operational and project teams.
  • Contribute to procedures for technical and quality assurance.
  • Deliver technical advice on assets, installations and maintenance.
  • Assist with business development and opportunities.
  • Build strong relationships with internal and external customers.

About the Role:

Balfour Beatty Living Places is seeking a talented and motivated Design Engineer to join our Street Lighting Division. Reporting to the Regional Senior Engineer, you will play a key role in delivering high-quality lighting designs for both new and existing developments across Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire.

This role offers the opportunity to apply your technical expertise to a wide variety of projects while supporting operational teams, customers, and stakeholders. You will contribute to innovative engineering solutions that enhance communities, improve infrastructure, and support sustainable development.

What you'll be doing

Key Responsibilities:

  • Produce accurate and timely street lighting designs, calculations, technical reviews and approvals.
  • Develop lighting solutions for new and existing developments in accordance with relevant standards and customer requirements.
  • Review Design Briefs and Technical Approval submissions.
  • Provide technical support and engineering expertise to operational and project teams.
  • Support the development and maintenance of technical and quality assurance procedures.
  • Deliver technical advice relating to street lighting assets, installations, and maintenance activities.
  • Assist with business development initiatives and work-winning opportunities.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external customers.
  • Ensure all work is delivered in line with health, safety, environmental and quality requirements.
  • Identify and implement innovative solutions that improve service delivery and customer outcomes.
Who we're looking for
  • Previous experience within street lighting design, highways engineering or a related infrastructure design environment.
  • Knowledge of relevant UK street lighting and highways design standards.
  • Experience using lighting design software and producing technical calculations.
  • Understanding of CDM Regulations and Health & Safety legislation.
  • EngTech registration or working towards Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status is desirable.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and deliver projects within agreed timescales.
  • A proactive approach with a focus on continuous improvement and innovation.
  • Experience supporting design and build projects would be advantageous.
