Job summary

Balfour Beatty Living Places is seeking a Design Engineer to deliver street lighting designs across Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire. You will report to the Regional Senior Engineer and shape innovative lighting solutions aligned with customer requirements.

The role combines technical design, calculations and reviews with stakeholder engagement, compliance with CDM and H&S, and involvement in business development opportunities to support sustainable urban lighting projects.

Qualifications

• This role requires experience in street lighting design and highways design.
• Knowledge of UK street lighting standards and relevant regulations.
• Experience producing technical lighting calculations and reviews.
• Understanding of CDM Regulations and Health & Safety legislation.
• EngTech registration or status progress desired.

Responsibilities

• Produce accurate street lighting designs, calculations, reviews and approvals.
• Develop lighting solutions for new and existing developments per standards and customer requirements.
• Review design briefs and technical approvals submissions.
• Provide technical support to operational and project teams.
• Support development of technical and QA procedures.
• Deliver advice on street lighting assets, installations and maintenance.
• Assist with business development and opportunities.
• Build strong relationships with customers and stakeholders.
• Ensure work complies with health, safety, environmental and quality requirements.
• Identify innovative solutions to improve service delivery.

About The Role

Job Title: Design Engineer

Balfour Beatty Living Places is seeking a talented and motivated Design Engineer to join our Street Lighting Division. Reporting to the Regional Senior Engineer, you will play a key role in delivering high-quality street lighting designs for both new and existing developments across Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire.

This role offers the opportunity to apply your technical expertise to a wide variety of projects while supporting operational teams, customers, and stakeholders. You will contribute to innovative engineering solutions that enhance communities, improve infrastructure, and support sustainable development.

Key Responsibilities

• Produce accurate and timely street lighting designs, calculations, technical reviews and approvals.
• Develop lighting solutions for new and existing developments in accordance with relevant standards and customer requirements.
• Review Design Briefs and Technical Approval submissions.
• Provide technical support and engineering expertise to operational and project teams.
• Support the development and maintenance of technical and quality assurance procedures.
• Deliver technical advice relating to street lighting assets, installations, and maintenance activities.
• Assist with business development initiatives and work-winning opportunities.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external customers.
• Ensure all work is delivered in line with health, safety, environmental and quality requirements.
• Identify and implement innovative solutions that improve service delivery and customer outcomes.

Who we're looking for

• Previous experience within street lighting design, highways engineering or a related infrastructure design environment.
• Knowledge of relevant UK street lighting and highways design standards.
• Experience using lighting design software and producing technical calculations.
• Understanding of CDM Regulations and Health & Safety legislation.
• EngTech registration or working towards Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status is desirable.
• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
• Ability to manage competing priorities and deliver projects within agreed timescales.
• A proactive approach with a focus on continuous improvement and innovation.
• Experience supporting design and build projects would be advantageous.
