Clarkson Owens Recruitment Limited, on behalf of our Edinburgh-based client, seeks a Design Engineer specialising in Highways and Drainage. You will design highways and drainage schemes, provide technical input, and collaborate across disciplines to deliver integrated solutions.

The role is full-time and permanent, hybrid working with 3 days in the office and 2 at home. A Civil Engineering degree and Chartered status or active progression towards chartership are preferred, with at least 3 years'

• Degree in Civil Engineering or higher qualification.
• Chartered status or actively working towards chartership.
• Min 3 years' experience on highways and/or drainage design.
• Experience in civil engineering design environment, preferably consultancy.
• Proficient in Civil 3D for highways/earthworks and InfoDrainage for drainage.
• Experience contributing to tenders with risk identification and mitigation.
• Strong communication, attention to detail, and teamwork.

Design Engineer - Highways & Drainage

Location: Edinburgh

About the Role

Clarkson Owens Recruitment is working with a client who is looking for an experienced Civil Engineer specialising in Highways and Drainage to join their team in Edinburgh.

Key Responsibilities

• Produce highways and drainage designs across a variety of projects.
• Provide technical expertise and specialist advice to colleagues and clients.
• Undertake Design Risk Assessments and contribute to project hazard workshops.
• Coordinate with other design disciplines to ensure integrated project solutions.
• Assist with civil engineering tendering, including reviewing tenders and developing design strategies.
• Identify project risks and opportunities and develop appropriate mitigation measures.
• Assist with the procurement and coordination of specialist subcontractors and suppliers.
• Prepare and coordinate tender deliverables.
• Liaise with clients and design teams throughout projects.
• Attend design team, client and site meetings as required.
• Maintain clear and proactive communication with project stakeholders.
• Share technical knowledge and support the development of other team members.
• Keep technical knowledge and professional development up to date.
• Contribute to business development and maintaining strong client relationships.

About You

The ideal candidate will have:

• A degree or higher-level qualification in Civil Engineering.
• Chartered status or be actively working towards chartership.
• A minimum of 3 years' experience working on projects involving highways and/or drainage design.
• Experience working within a civil engineering design environment, ideally within a consultancy.
• Experience using Civil 3D (or similar) for highways and earthworks design.
• Experience using InfoDrainage (or similar) for drainage design.
• Experience contributing to tenders, including risk identification and mitigation.
• Strong technical, written and verbal communication skills.
• Excellent attention to detail.
• The ability to work collaboratively and build strong relationships with clients and colleagues.
• Confidence in presenting technical ideas and solutions.
• The ability to represent the business professionally during site visits and surveys.

Experience working on infrastructure projects, particularly within the rail or power sectors, would be advantageous.

A current clean driving licence and willingness to travel to sites across the UK is desirable. Occasional site visits may involve early starts, late finishes or other unsociable hours.
