Job description

Deputy Pharmacy Clinical Services Manager - Surgery Women's and Children's Lead

We have an exciting, challenging, and rewarding opportunity to join our senior pharmacy team as Deputy Pharmacy Clinical Services Manager and Lead Pharmacist for Surgery Women’s and Children (SWC). This role offers a chance to make tangible, sustainable improvements in patient care and clinical pharmacy services.

We are seeking an enthusiastic leader to manage and develop clinical pharmacy services within the SWC division.

The Pharmacy Department at Great Western Hospital is central to the Trust’s initiative to innovate and transform. By embracing technology, diversity, new working methods, and a culture of continuous improvement, we place Medicines Optimisation and Pharmacy services at the core of patient care.

Our vision is for the future of pharmacy services as part of a fully integrated healthcare system. We want you to inspire our diverse and skilled team of clinical pharmacy staff and to play a key leadership role in delivering our vision of medicines optimisation across the Trust and wider care systems.

At GWH Pharmacy, we foster a positive, compassionate, and inclusive culture where we learn, improve, and celebrate our achievements as one team dedicated to providing excellent care.

This is a challenging yet exciting role, especially during a transformative period for the NHS. It is an opportunity to help shape the future of pharmacy clinical services.

Our STAR values – Service, Teamwork, Ambition, and Respect – underpin everything we do. These values guide us toward delivering integrated services that empower individuals to lead healthier, independent lives, whether at home, in the community, or within the hospital.

We seek a resilient, credible leader who shares our values and has a passion for delivering top-tier pharmacy services. You should bring extensive experience, a proven track record in service delivery, and the ability to elevate the profile of pharmacy services. The main duties include:

  1. Responsibility for the provision and development of clinical pharmacy services to SWC.
  2. Collaborating with the Pharmacy Clinical Services Manager on strategic planning and staffing for clinical services.
  3. Developing a strategic plan for pharmacy services within the surgery, women’s, and children’s division.
  4. Monitoring workload and reviewing staffing allocations for inpatient wards and specialties.
  5. Investigating medicine incidents and ensuring learning processes are in place.
  6. Creating, implementing, and updating protocols, guidelines, and policies aligned with best clinical practice and national guidance.
  7. Participating in meetings and working groups locally and within wider clinical networks.
  8. Attending and advising Trust committees and audits, providing guidance on medicines use and expenditure.
  9. Participating in flexible working rotas, including bank holidays, weekends, and evenings, as needed.
  10. Becoming or acting as an Independent Prescriber (IP) and developing this role within the Trust.
  11. Acting as an advanced practitioner for designated specialties, planning care, and identifying concerns related to medicine use.
  12. Supporting clinical decision-making and providing information related to drug spend and potential over-spends.
  13. Leading and managing a team of clinical and non-clinical pharmacy staff, including appraisals, staff development, recruitment, and handling disciplinary matters.
  14. Planning and delivering training for pharmacy and clinical staff.
  15. Acting as a role model and specialist practitioner for junior staff.
  16. Training, supervising, and assessing pharmacy staff, including trainee pharmacists, providing ward/clinical pharmacy services.
  17. Serving as a postgraduate tutor for pharmacy staff as required.
