Job summary

We have an exciting, challenging, and rewarding opportunity to join our senior pharmacy team as Deputy Pharmacy Clinical Services Manager and Lead Pharmacist for Surgery Women's and Children's (SWC). We are seeking an enthusiastic leader to manage and develop clinical pharmacy services within the SWC division. The Pharmacy Department at Great Western Hospital is central to the Trust's transformation initiatives, embracing technology, diversity, new working methods, and a culture of continuous improvement. Main duties of the job

As a leader, you will inspire our diverse and highly skilled team of clinical pharmacy staff and play a crucial role in delivering our vision of medicines optimisation across the Trust and wider care systems.

Job responsibilities
  • Lead and line manage a team responsible for clinical pharmacy services, supporting staff development, recruitment, and performance management.
  • Develop and implement strategic plans for pharmacy services within the SWC division.
  • Monitor workload and oversee staffing allocations to inpatient wards and specialties.
  • Investigate medication incidents, ensuring learning and improvement processes are in place.
  • Develop, update, and ensure adherence to protocols, guidelines, and policies in line with best practices and national guidance.
  • Participate in local and network-wide meetings, working groups, and committees related to clinical services and policies.
  • Advise on medicines usage and expenditure during audits and committee meetings.
  • Participate in flexible working rotas, including bank holidays, weekends, and evenings.
  • Become or act as an Independent Prescriber, further developing this role within the Trust.
  • Act as an advanced practitioner, planning care and addressing concerns related to medicine use in designated specialties.
  • Contribute to clinical decision-making and provide relevant information on drug spend and over-spend causes.
  • Train, supervise, and assess pharmacy staff, including trainees and postgraduate students.
Person Specification
Qualifications (Essential)
  • Master's Degree in Pharmacy or equivalent
  • Registered Pharmacist with the General Pharmaceutical Council
  • Postgraduate diploma or equivalent
  • Commitment to CPD and professional development
Qualifications (Desirable)
  • Member of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society
  • Training in change management
  • Management qualification or experience
Experience (Essential)
  • Significant experience as a qualified pharmacist
  • Proven service improvement using quality improvement methodologies
  • Leadership and staff development experience
  • Effective teamwork in multi-disciplinary settings
  • Teaching, mentoring, and tutoring experience
Experience (Desirable)
  • Business planning and implementation experience
  • Research project involvement and publication
Knowledge (Essential)
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Extensive clinical knowledge backed by ward/practice experience
  • Influencing skills within the NHS
Knowledge (Desirable)
  • Experience producing guidelines and policy documents for Trust/network
