Job description

Deputy News Editor (4 month FTC) - Mirror

We are looking for an experienced Deputy News Editor to join us at The Mirror. This is a fantastic opportunity to play a key role in shaping and setting the news agenda read by millions around the world every day. We are looking for an experienced, versatile journalist and editor who can write stories when required but also cover on the news desk.

We’re looking for fresh ideas and new perspectives from people from a wide range of backgrounds, and we want you to tell us the stories you believe are important from our many communities so we can continue to diversify our content.

This is a fixed term contract role, initially for 4 months starting as soon as possible.

This role is hub based, linked to our London Hub (minimum 3 days per week from the hub). We are therefore open to candidates based in and around London.

Job Description

What will the role involve?

You will direct coverage on major breaking news stories both domestic and foreign, ensuring the Mirror stays a step ahead of our rivals. You will sub edit and manage copy to ensure it is accurate and attention grabbing. You will also find, write and develop stories that will appeal to our UK and global audiences.

You are able to guide and support other journalists in your team while simultaneously ensuring all copy is legally sound and meets IPSO guidelines and the Mirror’s standards. This position will involve weekend and shift working, so a flexible approach is required.

Qualifications

Who are we looking for?

You are an experienced senior journalist and editor with an NCTJ or equivalent journalism qualification (or relevant time served) and in depth knowledge of media law. You have a strong track record of writing and editing breaking news stories at a national or major regional title with a deep understanding of what works for a digital audience.

You have first rate editing, writing and subbing skills, relish the test of working under pressure and to tight deadlines. You’re social media savvy with current SEO knowledge and a bursting book of industry contacts. You have an excellent eye for detail and can provide reporters in your team with guidance and encouragement.

Additional Information

What can we offer you?

We are offering a competitive salary, and benefits including:

  • Help saving for your retirement - join our pension scheme and we’ll match contributions up to 6%
  • 25 days’ holiday per year when you join. After three, five and ten years’ service with Reach, you’ll accrue one additional day of annual leave. We also have a Holiday Purchase Scheme
  • Giving back day - an additional day’s leave each year to support a cause close to your heart
  • Enhanced family leave - including maternity, paternity and adoption - and you’ll be eligible after just six months’ employment
  • Private Healthcare Cash Plan - free health cash plan so you can claim back cash for a range of medical expenses
  • As one of the UK’s top 50 Inclusive Employers everyone’s invited to join our events, programmes and networks to celebrate diversity and build an environment where all our people can thrive
  • Wellbeing support - including a 24/7 employee assistance programme (EAP) for you and your nearest and dearest
  • Awesome career opportunities - you’ll have support from your line manager and a range of learning & development programmes
  • We are also a member of the 30% Club, a global campaign aimed at increasing gender diversity at board and senior management levels
