The Environment Agency is seeking a Deputy Director for Environmental Markets & Regulation to provide strategic leadership in delivering a circular and Net-Zero economy. This permanent role involves overseeing various market-based schemes while managing stakeholder relationships and navigating complex regulatory environments. We are seeking an experienced leader to support the Environment Agency in delivering a circular and Net-Zero economy through regulation of market-based schemes. This permanent role involves providing strategic leadership to operational teams overseeing Producer Responsibility Waste markets, Carbon Markets, Hazardous Waste, Chemicals, Carriers, Brokers, and International Waste Shipments.
You will work with government, industry, and regulators to develop and implement standards, manage stakeholder relationships, and lead on regulatory activities. The role requires excellent communication, strategic thinking, and leadership skills, with a focus on health, safety, wellbeing, diversity, and inclusion. You will contribute to national and organizational goals, representing the Agency in complex political and regulatory environments.
The team, part of National Regulation & Monitoring, comprises around 550 staff and is set to grow. It works closely with various departments and external bodies to deliver impactful environmental regulation.
This role involves incident response responsibilities, requiring availability for emergencies. Virtual interviews are scheduled for July 28-29, 2025. The role reports to Malcolm Lythgo, Director of Operations, and offers flexible working arrangements.
