An opportunity has arisen for a Band 4 Registered Dental Nurse to join our small, friendly team in the Maxillo-Facial and Orthodontic Department at Harrogate District Hospital.
We are looking for someone who is ready for a new challenge, enjoys the satisfaction of providing excellent patient care and works well in a team. The successful candidate will work across the department in all areas, including Max Fax, Oral Surgery local anaesthetic lists and Orthodontics.
The 16 hours per week will be worked over two days in our outpatient department. All relevant training will be provided.
To provide assistance and support in a broad range of procedures within our Maxillo-Facial and Orthodontic clinics, keeping the patient at the centre of all we do.
This includes supporting our Max Fax clinics, assisting in our local anaesthetic surgical lists (both dento-alveolar and surgical treatment of head and neck skin cancers) and providing chair-side assistance in our Orthodontic clinics. It is expected that high standards of patient care and infection prevention and control measures are maintained.

To prepare, set up and work independently and manage relevant clinic rooms, provide all relevant medical records, letters, reports, radiographs and study models.
Act as a chaperone at all times during a patient assessment and treatment.
To decontaminate and prepare clinical areas between patients, and to maintain high levels of cross infection.
Undertake scrub nurse duties to clinician to include retraction and aspiration of surgical operation site, ensuring that the appropriate nursing care is maintained.
To maintain aseptic conditions in Maxillo Facial procedures.
To provide appropriate post-operative advice and guidance to patients and carers.
To assist Orthodontic Consultant and clinicians during treatment of fixed appliances and removable orthodontic appliances.
Prepare and mix dental materials on request.
Communicate to a wide age group from small children to the elderly, whilst being aware of barriers of communication such as language, hearing impairment, learning difficulties etc. Maintain effective written and verbal communication skills.
Able to work as part of a team under own initiative.
Assist with ordering and stock rotation.
Undertakes daily testing and maintenance checks on equipment to ensure they are fit for purpose.
Responsible for keeping accurate and legible records using computerised / written systems.
Participates in audits and surveys as necessary to own work.
The post holder is required to demonstrate ongoing, continuous professional development and should not work outside their defined level of competence.
The post holder is required to participate in the Trusts performance review process and work towards meeting identified development needs /objectives.
Promotes good standard of Health and Safety in working practice using judgement and analytical skills to identify risks and seek solutions.
Ensures clinical areas comply with Health and Safety, Waste, COSHH, Infection Control, Medical Devices and Decontamination policies.
Post holder must carry out their responsibilities in regard to all Trust policy and protocols.
Comply with the relevant Governance standards applicable to the trust and maintain the confidentiality of information about patients, staff and other health service business in accordance with the Data protection act of 1998.
To attend mandatory training required for post.
Child protection training is mandatory for all staff in the Trust.

General
The post holder is required to maintain frequent and high levels of concentration throughout the day associated with a wide variety of nursing tasks: Chairside assisting orthodontic clinicians, surgical assisting, maintaining clinical need, answering patient’s queries, post-operative advice and dealing with telephone enquiries.
The post holder will frequently be exposed to highly charged emotional situations, when dealing with patients with high anxieties associated with dental phobia, skin cancer diagnosis, fears of scars etc.
Working conditions can be unpleasant due to the nature of treatment and involvement of bodily fluids, secretions, mouth odours etc.
You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
