Job summary

Royal Mail is seeking a Lead Data Scientist to provide technical leadership across its Data Science capability in London. The role combines hands-on delivery with leadership and capability development, mentoring Data Scientists and driving best practice across the function.

This is an influential role working with senior stakeholders to deliver complex analytics, AI and forecasting initiatives that improve customer experience and optimise operations.

Qualifications

• Extensive experience delivering analytics, ML and optimisation solutions.
• Proven ability with statistical modelling and experimental design.
• Advanced Python and SQL skills.
• Experience leading Data Science initiatives from problem to value realisation.
• Experience coaching or leading Data Scientists.
• Strong stakeholder management and ability to influence diverse audiences.
• Experience with large datasets to generate actionable insights.
• Knowledge of cloud-based analytics platforms and modern ML deployment.

Responsibilities

• Lead the design and delivery of advanced Data Science, ML and AI solutions that support strategic and operational decision-making.
• Provide technical leadership, coaching and mentoring to Data Scientists across the team.
• Drive adoption of Data Science best practices, standards and modern ways of working.
• Work closely with Data Engineers, ML Engineers and Technology teams to develop scalable analytical solutions.
• Partner with business stakeholders to identify opportunities and shape data-driven approaches to complex challenges.
• Oversee solution quality, methodology selection and delivery across the Data Science portfolio.
• Support recruitment, capability development and growth of the Data Science function.
• Translate complex analytical outputs into practical business recommendations that create measurable value.
