We are looking for an individual who has a genuine love of data protection, can think innovatively, and provide practical and commercial advice regarding data protection. Reporting to the Director of Compliance, the Data Protection Officer will offer specialist guidance on data protection laws and regulations to ensure compliance and foster a culture where data protection is central to our business.
In this role, you'll undertake various important tasks essential for operating in compliance with relevant data protection laws and regulations.
Key Responsibilities :
- Ensure personal information is processed in accordance with applicable legal and regulatory obligations.
- Implement industry good practices through appropriate data privacy frameworks.
- Monitor compliance with legal, regulatory obligations, and company data protection policies, including managing activities, raising awareness, providing training, and conducting reviews.
- Manage data privacy breaches or near misses, identify root causes, implement mitigation, and prevent recurrence.
- Advise on and oversee data protection impact assessments.
- Act as the primary contact for the ICO and data subjects, ensuring timely responses to data access requests.
- Identify key risks related to data processing, escalate as needed, and collaborate with the risk team to monitor and mitigate these risks.
- Provide SME input on data handling, classification, retention, loss prevention, encryption, and emerging technologies like AI.
- Manage, coach, and mentor the Data Protection team to achieve high performance and oversight.
Skills, Experience, and Qualifications :
- Experience managing a team in a similar role.
- Strong understanding of UK data protection laws and regulations, with relevant qualifications such as ISEB/CIPPE.
- Experience applying Privacy by Design and Default, conducting Data Privacy Impact Assessments, and assessing data breaches.
- Experience as a DPO in a B2C environment, preferably Telecoms, handling large customer data sets including marketing data.
- Ability to independently perform DPO duties, communicate with regulators and data subjects, and advise the business.
- Experience collaborating with technical and security teams to develop data protection policies.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and prioritize effectively.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, adept at building relationships and managing stakeholders.
- Strong writing skills for detailed analysis and clear reporting.
- Proven ability to implement change and manage processes.
- Previous telco experience in a similar role is advantageous.
- Law degree and experience as legal counsel are desirable.
