Job summary

Islington Council is seeking a Data Protection Support Officer to assist the Information Governance (IG) Team and the Data Protection Officer in embedding high standards of data protection across the Council.

You will help ensure compliance with the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018, support data breach management, monitoring, and staff awareness, and contribute to effective information governance in a busy public sector environment.

Qualifications

• Experience with UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018.
• Strong understanding of information governance practices.
• Experience in data breach handling and reporting.

Responsibilities

• Act as the first point of contact for data breach reports and escalate as needed.
• Manage the Data Protection mailbox and triage emails to relevant officers.
• Support Information Management Lead in managing the Information Asset Owner network.
• Support the Access to Information Team during peak periods with scanning and disclosure checks.
• Coordinate the Information Governance Board and ensure meetings run smoothly.
• Track performance information related to information governance training and data breaches.
• Provide timely reports to the Head of Information Governance & DPO and Corporate Management Board.
• Escalate areas of non-compliance to the Information Governance Board.
• Assist with compliance under Article 30 of the UK GDPR.

Job Overview To work as part of the Information Governance (IG) Team, supporting the Data Protection Officer (DPO) and Information Management Lead to embed the highest standards of data protection across the Council. The role will ensure that the Council complies with the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018, supporting effective information governance, data breach management, compliance monitoring and staff awareness.

Key Responsibilities

Information Governance & Data Protection

• Act as the first point of contact for data breach reports, escalating matters to the DPO as required.
• Manage the Data Protection mailbox, ensuring emails are appropriately flagged and directed to the relevant officers.
• Support the Information Management Lead in managing the Information Asset Owner (IAO) network.
• Support the Access to Information Team during busy periods, including scanning and reviewing information before disclosure.
• Coordinate the Information Governance Board, ensuring meetings are effectively organised and managed.
• Manage performance information relating to information governance training and data breaches.
• Provide accurate and timely reports to the Head of Information Governance & DPO and Corporate Management Board (CMB).
• Escalate areas of non-compliance to the Information Governance Board.
• Support compliance with the Council's obligations under Article 30 of the UK GDPR.
