Job summary

St Helens Council is seeking a Data Protection Co-ordinator within the Information Governance, Compliance and Complaints Team. You will advise services on lawful handling of personal information, manage information rights requests, and promote best practice in data protection across the organisation.

The role supports privacy notices, GDPR compliance, and information governance, while ensuring timely responses to residents.

Responsibilities

  • Provide expert advice and support to services on lawful handling of personal information and information governance obligations.
  • Manage information rights requests, including Subject Access Requests and Freedom of Information requests, to ensure timely, compliant responses.
  • Help raise awareness and provide training on data protection and information governance across the organisation.

Job description

The Information Governance, Compliance and Complaints Team helps the Council meet its legal and regulatory responsibilities for information management, data protection and complaints from customers. The team supports information requests, data breach management, privacy notices and GDPR compliance, while also overseeing complaints, compliments and feedback processes to help improve services and customer experience across the Council.

The team also handles request for personal information, this is called a Subject Access Request as well as Freedom of Information requests. The team is responsible for reviewing requests to ensure that they are valid and ensuring residents and customers receive information in a timely manner and in accordance with statutory requirements.

Roles That Matter

The Data Protection Co-ordinator plays a key role in helping the Council meet its data protection and information governance obligations. The role provides advice and support to services on the lawful handling of personal information, manages information rights requests, assists with the handling and response to Subject Access Requests , and helps ensure compliance with data protection legislation and Council policies. The post may also support staff awareness and training, and promotes best practice in information management across the organisation.

Employees can regularly work away from Council workspaces (including home or other locations), alongside required office-based working. The balance between remote and office-based working is determined at service level based on operational need, however, there has been a minimum specification that staff will work at least 2 days from an office-based location.
