Job summary

Artis Recruitment Ltd is recruiting a Data Engineering Lead for a leading Professional Services organisation in Bristol. You will lead a team of Data Engineers, provide technical direction, and contribute to the modernisation of the cloud-based data platform, including Databricks.

The role combines hands-on data engineering with people leadership, working in a hybrid model with 3 days on site in Bristol. Strong SQL and Python, Databricks expertise, and excellent stakeholder management are

Data Engineer required by leading Professional Services organisation in Bristol

Salary: Up to £85,000 + 10% Bonus
Location: Bristol – Hybrid (3 days onsite)

A leading Professional Services organisation is looking for an experienced Data Engineering Lead to play a key role in the continued development and transformation of its data capability.

This is an excellent opportunity for a technically strong Data Engineering professional who enjoys combining hands‑on engineering with team leadership. You will lead a talented team of Data Engineers, provide technical direction and coaching, and remain actively involved in solving complex data challenges.

The organisation is investing heavily in its data estate, and you will play a key role in the modernisation of its cloud‑based data platform, including the continued development of its Databricks environment.

The Role

As Data Engineering Lead, you will provide both technical and people leadership, helping to shape the future direction of the organisation’s data platforms and engineering capability.

Key responsibilities will include:

• Leading, mentoring and developing a team of Data Engineers.
• Providing technical leadership across scalable, reliable and secure data platforms.
• Remaining hands‑on with complex data engineering and technical challenges.
• Leading the migration and modernisation of existing data platforms into a modern Databricks environment.
• Designing and maintaining high‑quality data pipelines, models and curated datasets.
• Ensuring the stability, performance and continuous improvement of critical data platforms.
• Supporting wider technology and business transformation programmes.
• Working closely with BI, Data Science, Architecture, Technology and wider business stakeholders.
• Championing engineering best practice, including testing, deployment, monitoring, documentation and code reviews.
• Supporting Agile ways of working, including prioritisation, planning and delivery.
• Identifying opportunities to improve data platforms, tooling and engineering practices.

About You

We are looking for an experienced Data Engineering professional with a strong technical background and proven experience leading engineering teams within a complex environment.

You will ideally have:

• Proven experience leading and developing Data Engineering teams.
• Strong hands‑on experience with modern cloud‑based data platforms.
• Excellent SQL and Python skills.
• Extensive experience with Databricks, Spark and lakehouse architectures.
• Strong knowledge of data engineering, data modelling and architecture best practice.
• Experience delivering data solutions for reporting, analytics and data science.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
• The ability to balance strategic technical leadership with hands‑on delivery.
• Experience working within Agile delivery environments.

Experience of large‑scale technology transformation, data migration, platform modernisation or wider business change would also be beneficial.

Exposure to technologies such as Tableau or low‑code integration platforms would be advantageous but is not essential.
