Job summary

AJ Walter Aviation is seeking a data engineer to build and own the data foundation for our AI products within our cloud data platform. This role closes a gap in dedicated data engineering support for the AI Innovation team, enabling faster and more reliable delivery of AI features.

You will design pipelines, optimise SQL, model data, and collaborate with AI engineers to ensure data needs are met. The role emphasizes reliability, data quality, and cross-functional communication.

Job description

In this role, you’ll build and own the data foundation that AJW's AI products depend on, working within the company's existing cloud data platform. The role closes a gap in dedicated data engineering support for the AI Innovation team, enabling faster and more reliable delivery of AI features.

What you’ll be doing:

• Designing, building and maintaining ETL/ELT pipelines.
• Writing and optimising SQL, and maintaining data models and schemas.
• Working with the AI Engineer to understand and meet data needs for AI features.
• Monitoring data pipeline health and troubleshooting issues.
• Liaising with the wider Data & Analytics function on architecture and standards.
• Documenting data flows, quality checks and retention practices

About you

• Proven experience designing, building and maintaining production-grade data pipelines (ETL/ELT) within modern cloud-based data platforms.
• Strong SQL expertise and data modelling capabilities, with hands-on experience using cloud data warehouses and data transformation/orchestration tools.
• Demonstrated ability to integrate data from multiple sources to create scalable and reliable data solutions.
• Highly analytical, methodical and detail-oriented approach to problem-solving.
• Comfortable collaborating with cross-functional engineering teams beyond traditional BI and reporting environments.
• Strong communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain technical concepts, data decisions and trade-offs to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
