About us

At Serco, we unite the right people, technology, and partners to solve some of the world's most pressing and complex challenges. From defence and space to healthcare, justice, transport and beyond, our UK operations deliver critical services across government sectors—driven by expertise in service design, programme management, engineering, and more.

About the role

As a Data Engineer, you’ll play a key role in delivering high-quality data solutions that power business intelligence and decision-making across Serco. Working alongside Senior and Lead Data Engineers, you’ll support the design and development of robust data pipelines (ETLs/ELTs), data warehouses, and data models, ensuring security and scalability throughout. You’ll also collaborate closely with BI Analysts and Developers to translate business needs into technical requirements and help identify the most effective data solutions.

Our primary platforms include Microsoft SQL Azure and Power BI, and you’ll also contribute to the ongoing support and development of our DevOps pipelines. This is a collaborative and hands-on role where you’ll be encouraged to share your expertise, support colleagues, and help shape the way Serco manages and leverages its data assets.

Key Accountabilities

  • Design and develop semantic layers to support effective reporting by BI developers and power users.
  • Collaborate with business leads, technical experts, and delivery partners to implement data solutions.
  • Evaluate and recommend pragmatic, cost-effective approaches to meet reporting and analytics needs.
  • Identify and implement performance optimisations using a continuous improvement mindset.
  • Support analysis of report usage and performance to drive adoption and business value.
  • Create and maintain clear documentation, including data models, dictionaries, glossaries, and quality attributes.
  • Align engineering outputs with the overall Data Strategy and functional roadmaps.

Skills & Experience

  • At least 3 years’ experience designing and building analytical data solutions that deliver measurable business value.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills, with the ability to build trusted relationships, shape requirements, challenge assumptions, and deliver collaboratively.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Azure data services (e.g. Data Factory, Synapse SQL Pools, Analysis Services); experience with Microsoft Fabric is a plus but not essential.
  • Familiarity with industry best practices and standards, with the ability to justify alternative approaches when appropriate.
  • Clear, adaptable communicator able to translate technical detail for business stakeholders and vice versa.
  • Experience working with third-party and offshore delivery partners across design, development, and support.
  • Strategic thinker with a continuous improvement mindset, able to contribute to evolving roadmaps and introduce innovative solutions.
