Job summary

Ocado is selecting a Data Engineer (Modelling & Transformation) in Hatfield to build and maintain the foundational data warehouse powering analytics, reporting, ML, and partner data products. You will transform raw data into trusted datasets to drive strategic decisions in an agile environment.

Qualifications

• Proven experience developing ELT/ETL pipelines with dbt.
• Strong SQL and Python fundamentals.

• Degree in CS, DS, SE, Math, or equivalent.
• Solid understanding of core data concepts.

Key Responsibilities

• Collaborate with analysts, data scientists, product teams, and platform engineers to deliver secure, business-ready datasets.
• Monitor, troubleshoot, and optimise pipeline performance to continuously improve efficiency and operational resilience.

What We’re Looking For

• Proven experience developing ELT/ETL pipelines and working with data transformation frameworks such as dbt.
• Strong SQL skills and a solid understanding of programming fundamentals in Python, SQL, or standard query languages.
• Hands-on experience using Git and CI/CD workflows.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and clear communication skills with a collaborative mindset.

About the Role

As a Data Engineer within our Data Engineering Modelling and Transformation team, you will be directly responsible for building and maintaining the foundational data warehouse that powers analytics, reporting, machine learning, and partner data products across Ocado Technology. In this role, you will transform raw operational data into trusted, governed, and business-ready datasets that drive strategic and operational decision-making across the entire organisation. Working in an agile environment, you will collaborate closely with storage, transformation, and analysis.

Nice to Haves

• Practical experience writing Python for data engineering workloads.
• Experience working with modern cloud data warehouses, ideally Google BigQuery.
• Practical understanding of dimensional data modelling principles.
• Experience using tools in our tech stack such as Airflow, Terraform, or Grafana.
