Job summary

Apex Systems US is seeking a mechanically-biased Engineering Operations Technician for our London data centre portfolio. You will work on mechanical cooling, water systems, AHUs, chillers, cooling towers and water treatment, supporting 24/7 operations.

The role requires hands-on maintenance, testing, and documentation within a safety-conscious environment, with flexible scheduling including nights and weekends.

Qualifications

• Must have data centre background and hands-on mechanical skills.
• Experience with pressurized water systems, pipework installations and fluid distribution networks.
• Knowledge of ACOP L8 and HSG274 water treatment guidance and compliant regimes.
• Ability to read and interpret procedures, technical documents and engineering drawings.

Responsibilities

• Install, maintain, repair pipework, fittings, valves and manifolds across cooling loops.
• Operate and maintain AHUs, chillers, cooling towers and water systems.
• Conduct pressure testing, leak detection, and system integrity checks on water circuits.
• Manage water treatment programs per ACOP L8/HSG274.
• Monitor pumps, heat exchangers and CDUs; troubleshoot mechanical assets.
• Support commissioning/decommissioning of mechanical cooling infrastructure.

Data Centre Facility Engineer, Data Centre Engineering Operations

Role Overview

Our organization is seeking a mechanically-biased Engineering Operations Technician to join our team. This hands‑on role is focused on the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of mechanical cooling and water systems infrastructure across our data centre portfolio. The ideal candidate must have a data centre background and will work directly with air handling units, chillers, cooling towers, and associated water treatment plant. This is a shift-based role requiring flexibility to support 24/7 operations.

Key Responsibilities

• Install, maintain, and repair pipework, fittings, valves, and manifolds across cooling distribution loops and water circuits.
• Operate and maintain air handling units (AHUs), chillers, cooling towers, evaporative cooling systems, and liquid cooling infrastructure.
• Perform pressure testing, leak detection, and system integrity checks on pressurized water circuits.
• Manage water treatment programs in line with ACOP L8 and HSG274 requirements.
• Maintain and troubleshoot pumps, heat exchangers, coolant distribution units (CDUs), and associated mechanical components.
• Monitor thermal performance of cooling systems to optimize flow rates and energy efficiency.
• Support commissioning and decommissioning of mechanical cooling infrastructure.
• Perform routine preventive maintenance on mechanical assets.
• Respond to alarms and incidents related to leaks, pressure anomalies, or thermal exceedances.
• Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, water treatment logs, and system parameters.
• Collaborate with controls engineers on BMS/SCADA integration for mechanical plant monitoring.
• Adhere to all site safety procedures including permit-to-work and LOTO.

Required Qualifications

• Must have data centre background.
• Demonstrable experience working with pressurized water systems, pipework installations, and fluid distribution networks.
• Knowledge of mechanical systems (Mechanical, HVAC systems, Controls).
• Experience reading and writing procedures, technical documents, and engineering drawings.
• Knowledge of generic mechanical room infrastructure such as chillers, cooler units, and fan controls.
• NVQ Level 3 in Mechanical, Electrical or Mechatronics, or NFQ Level 3 (or equivalent).
• Knowledge of ACOP L8 and HSG274 guidance, with experience implementing compliant water treatment regimes.
• Practical understanding of fluid dynamics principles including flow rates, pressure drop, and heat transfer.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, nights, and holidays.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with EPMS/SCADA/BMS controls system software or hardware.
• Direct experience with liquid cooling technologies such as CDUs or rear-door heat exchangers.
• City & Guilds 2079 or equivalent Legionella control qualification.
• Knowledge of water treatment processes including closed-loop and open-loop system management.
• IOSH Managing Safely or NEBOSH General Certificate.
• Experience with commissioning or decommissioning of mechanical systems.
• Understanding of cooling architectures and thermal management principles.
• Preferred backgrounds include construction, banking, or manufacturing/factory environments.
