Job summary

The Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales is seeking a Data Assistant to support its Online Services Team. This part-time, fixed-term role offers £27,303–£29,292/year (pro-rata for 18.5 hours/week) and runs until 31 March 2027.

The successful candidate will enhance and maintain the National Monuments Record of Wales (NMRW), ensuring data quality, adherence to standards, and bilingual content integration. This is a remote role open to candidates across the UK.

Qualifications

  • Right to work in the UK (UK nationals, Irish citizens, etc.).
  • GCSE and/or A Level qualifications (or equivalent) in data-related subjects.
  • Degree in Archaeology, Welsh History, GIS, Archive/Records Management, or related field.
  • Welsh language skills (Level 2+) and experience in bilingual workplaces.

Responsibilities

  • Undertake data cleansing and enhancement to improve retrieval and quality.
  • Verify information from external contributors using varied source material.
  • Assist with integration of data into ARCHES for HERs from project databases.
  • Enhance bibliographic and source information for records.
  • Add Welsh-language content in line with work programmes.
  • Import/export data between software platforms.
  • Support colleagues with data/software queries (IT ticketing system use).
  • Contribute to project or outreach work as required.

About RCAHMW

Established in 1908 and sponsored by the Welsh Government, the Royal Commission is the national archive and investigation body for Wales’s historic environment. It holds the National Monuments Record of Wales (NMRW) and promotes understanding of Wales’s archaeological, architectural, and maritime heritage.

The Online Services Team ensures high-quality online information provision, including Coflein ( https://coflein.gov.uk/en/ ), and leads data standards work across the sector.

  • Undertake data cleansing and enhancement activities to improve retrieval and quality

Candidate Requirements
  • Right to work in the UK (UK nationals, Irish citizens, Commonwealth, EEA nationals with settled/pre-settled status, etc.)
  • GCSE and/or A Level qualifications (or equivalent) in data-related subjects
  • Knowledge of Wales’s heritage and history, with interest in the historic environment
  • Experience working with digital data (creation, editing, verification)
  • Excellent IT skills (Microsoft Office 365 proficiency)
  • Ability to work methodically, accurately, and independently
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Teamwork and support skills
  • Degree in Archaeology, Welsh History, GIS, Archive/Records Management, or related field
  • Experience in Wales’s historic environment sector
  • Familiarity with Power BI, AtoM, Arches, or map-based/geographical records
  • Welsh language skills (Level 2 or above on RCAHMW’s Welsh Skills Assessment Framework)
  • Experience in bilingual workplaces or Welsh language policy frameworks
