About Us:

Join our dynamic Estates Services team at the University of Exeter, where we are committed to creating a sustainable and efficient campus environment. Our department plays a vital role in managing and improving the University's physical estate, contributing to the achievement of our strategic goals, including sustainability and operational excellence. As a member of our team, you'll be part of an innovative and supportive community working towards making a positive impact on our campus and beyond.

The Role:

Are you passionate about data analytics and data engineering and interested in applying these skills within the built environment?

We are seeking a Data Analyst to join our Digital Estates team, where the primary focus of the role is on data integration, analytics, and reporting. You will design and maintain data pipelines that bring together information from multiple sources - including asset data, space data, operational systems, and BIM models - and transform it into insights that support decision-making across the estate.

You will work on developing structured datasets, dashboards, and analytical outputs that support space management, asset performance, compliance reporting, and sustainability objectives. BIM forms part of the data landscape you will work with, but the role is fundamentally about data quality, analytics, and insight generation rather than model authoring.

You will collaborate with a wide range of stakeholders and contribute to strategic initiatives such as the Net Zero programme, Campus Digital Twin, and Smart Campus projects.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Design, build, and maintain data pipelines and workflows that integrate data from multiple sources, including operational systems, space and asset registers, BIM datasets, and other digital platforms.
  • Maintain high-quality, well-structured datasets that support operational reporting, performance analysis, and institutional returns (e.g. HESA EMR, TRAC).
  • Develop dashboards and analytical reports using Power BI to support planning, performance monitoring, compliance, and decision-making.
  • Apply data analytics techniques using Python, SQL, or R to identify trends, inefficiencies, and opportunities across the estate.
  • Work with engineers and system owners to integrate data from building systems (e.g. BMS, meters, sensors) into analytical workflows.
  • Support information management across the asset lifecycle by ensuring data aligns with agreed standards and classifications (e.g. ISO 19650, Uniclass, SFG20, COBie).
  • Collaborate with Digital Estates colleagues to support structured information handover from projects into operational systems.
  • Promote good practice in data governance, documentation, and repeatable workflows.
  • Support training and engagement activities to improve data literacy across Estates Services.
About You:

You are a data-focused professional who enjoys working with complex datasets and building reliable, repeatable data workflows. You are comfortable translating business questions into analytical outputs and communicating insights to non-technical audiences.

You may have experience in estates, property, infrastructure, energy, or another data-rich sector, and are motivated by the opportunity to apply data analytics to real-world operational and sustainability challenges.

Qualifications and Experience:
Essential:
  • A BSc or MSc in Data Analytics Data Science, Computer Science, Software/Data Engineering, Information Systems, Business Analysis Statistics/Mathematics, or an Engineering discipline relevant to the built environment (e.g., Building Services, Civil, Mechanical, Electrical).
  • Experience in a data analyst or data engineering role involving the design and delivery of data pipelines (ETL/ELT), including data ingestion, transformation, validation, and reporting.
  • Strong skills in Python and/or SQL for data processing, automation, and building repeatable data workflows.
  • Experience integrating data from multiple source systems (e.g. operational systems, asset registers, project data or spatial datasets) into structured analytical datasets.
  • Experience developing and maintaining dashboards and reports using Power BI (or equivalent tools) to support operational and strategic decision-making.
  • Experience working with structured datasets, applying data standards, classifications, and quality controls to ensure consistency, traceability, and reliability.
  • Ability to document and maintain data workflows and transformations to support transparency, auditability, and reuse.
Desirable:
  • Experience building or supporting cloud-based or hybrid data platforms, including data warehouses or lake-style architectures (e.g., AWS or equivalent).
  • Familiarity with data orchestration or scheduling tools (e.g. Airflow, NiFI, Node Red or similar) to support automated ETL/ELT workflows.
  • Experience implementing data quality checks, validation rules, and monitoring within data pipelines.
  • Exposure to version-controlled data development using tools such as Git and basic CI/CD practices.
  • Experience working with built-environment or estates data, such as asset registers, space data, building systems, or project delivery information.
  • Awareness of structured data standards and classifications relevant to estates and infrastructure (e.g. ISO 19650, Uniclass, COBie, SFG20).
  • Experience integrating or analyzing data from operational systems such as CAFM, BMS, energy, or sensor platforms.
  • Awareness of sustainability, carbon, or ESG reporting and how data supports these outcomes.
