Following a positive recommendation from the UK National Screening Committee and the successful delivery of a pilot in North Rhondda, the Welsh Government has approved the implementation of Lung Screening Wales (LSW) as a new national screening programme. This is an exciting opportunity for experienced and motivated radiographers to play a key role in developing and delivering a service that will improve health outcomes across Wales.
We are seeking to recruit two CT Superintendent Radiographers to support the development and implementation of LSW. Working closely with the Lead Radiographer and multidisciplinary programme team, post holders will have a unique opportunity to utilise their clinical knowledge and gain valuable strategic experience whilst establishing imaging services and preparing the programme for operational delivery.
As the service transitions into operational delivery in early 2028, post holders will move into senior leadership roles managing a Mobile Screening Unit (MSU) within a designated geographical region (See regions below), delivering safe, effective and participant-centred screening services.
We are looking for experienced CT radiographers with strong leadership, communication and organisational skills, a commitment to quality improvement, and a passion for reducing health inequalities and improving population health across Wales.
Lung Screening Wales includes several stages in the participant pathway, including cohort identification and invitation, risk assessment, low-dose CT (LDCT) scanning, image reporting, integrated smoking cessation support and results management.
The CT Superintendent Radiographers will play a key role in implementing and delivering the imaging pathway, ensuring services are delivered in accordance with national standards, professional guidance and programme requirements.
During the implementation phase, post holders will contribute to activities required to establish the imaging service and prepare the programme for operational delivery.
From early 2028, each CT Superintendent Radiographer will lead the day-to-day operation of a regional MSU, providing clinical and operational leadership to Radiographers and Assistant Practitioners while also undertaking LDCT scanning activity. They will maintain high standards of imaging quality, radiation safety, participant experience and governance, while supporting continuous service improvement across the programme.
As a national programme role, regular travel will be required within the allocated region and occasionally across Wales. Eligible mileage and travel expenses will be reimbursed in accordance with organisational policies and NHS terms and conditions.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.
During the first year, the CT Superintendent Radiographers will play a leading role in the implementation of Lung Screening Wales. Working closely with the Lead Radiographer and key stakeholders, they will support workforce development, service mobilisation and operational planning, helping to establish the imaging service and prepare Mobile Screening Units (MSUs) for programme launch. As subject matter experts in CT imaging, they will contribute to the development of clinical pathways, protocols and governance processes, while supporting the commissioning, testing and deployment of MSUs across Wales.
As the programme transitions into operational delivery from early 2028, each post holder will assume clinical and operational responsibility for a designated MSU and screening region. They will provide leadership to Radiographers and Assistant Practitioners, ensuring the delivery of safe, effective and participant-centred screening services in accordance with programme standards and policies.
The post holders will be responsible for maintaining high standards of imaging quality, radiation safety and operational performance. Acting as Radiation Protection Supervisors (RPS), they will ensure compliance with relevant legislation, programme requirements and professional standards. They will lead quality assurance, audit and governance activities, using performance data to drive continuous improvement and support excellent participant outcomes.
Working collaboratively with radiologists, nurses, Health Boards and national programme colleagues, the CT Superintendent Radiographers will promote effective pathway delivery, operational consistency and the sharing of best practice across Lung Screening Wales.
Regional Mobile Screening Unit Deployment
Indicative screening locations currently include:
These locations may be subject to change as implementation planning progresses. MSU’s will rotate between these locations, returning to each site every three months to provide new, surveillance and recall LDCT screening appointments, with deployment schedules determined by programme requirements and population need.
While four screening regions have been identified, two CT Superintendent Radiographers will initially be appointed during the implementation phase. Regional allocations will be determined during implementation planning, considering service requirements and, where possible, the successful candidates' geographical base to minimise travel. A further two CT Superintendent Radiographer posts are expected to be recruited closer to operational delivery, with the aim of providing dedicated leadership for each screening region.
This is a hybrid role with flexible/home working arrangements during the implementation phase. Once operational, regular travel throughout the allocated region will be required, together with occasional travel elsewhere in Wales. The post holder will attend their contractual base, MSU locations, healthcare facilities and programme meetings as required to support service delivery.
Please note: Lung Screening is a new service currently being established across Wales. The successful candidates’ initial base will be agreed on appointment. As the service develops, these posts will be aligned to one of four regions across Wales from April 2028. The specific bases for each region are still being determined and this may result in a change to the postholder’s base once the regional arrangements are finalised. Applicants should therefore be aware that some flexibility in relation to future work location will be required.
You will be able to find the full Job Description and Person Specification attached within the supporting documents.
