Job summary

Experis UK is seeking an experienced Critical Facilities Engineer (Shift Lead) to support operation and maintenance of essential M&E infrastructure within a high-availability data centre environment in Dundee.

As shift lead you will supervise technicians, respond to incidents, oversee UPS, generators, chillers and building services, and ensure safety and regulatory compliance on site.

Qualifications

  • Experience as a critical facilities engineer in mission-critical environments.
  • Proven ability to lead on shift in live data centre environments.
  • Strong knowledge of UPS, generators, chillers and building services.

Responsibilities

  • Lead engineering activities during designated shift periods as senior technical representative.
  • Operate, monitor and maintain UPS, standby generators, HV/LV distribution equipment, switchgear, transformers, PDUs, CRAC/CRAH units, chillers, pumps and related building services.
  • Perform routine inspections and condition monitoring to ensure reliability of critical infrastructure.
  • Coordinate and oversee planned preventative maintenance and safety procedures.
  • Respond to alarms and incidents, diagnose faults, and restore service with escalation as needed.
  • Act as first technical escalation during incidents and coordinate resolution.
  • Review and execute SOPs, permits to work, risk assessments, and EOPs.
  • Supervise technicians and contractors in live environments, ensuring safety and standards.
  • Utilise DCIM, BMS, and environmental monitoring to monitor performance and risks.
  • Maintain shift logs, maintenance records, and asset documentation; ensure smooth handovers.

Critical Facilities Engineer (Shift Lead)

Overview

We are seeking experienced Critical Facilities Engineers (Shift Leads) to support the operation and maintenance of essential mechanical and electrical infrastructure within a high-availability data centre environment.

As the engineering lead on shift, you will be responsible for ensuring critical power, cooling, and life-safety systems operate safely and reliably while supervising technicians and coordinating first-response activities during incidents.

This is an excellent opportunity for experienced engineers from data centres, hospitals, utilities, manufacturing, or other mission-critical environments looking to progress their careers within a rapidly growing sector.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead all engineering activities during designated shift periods, acting as the senior technical representative within a live mission-critical environment.
  • Operate, monitor and maintain critical electrical and mechanical infrastructure including UPS systems, standby generators, HV/LV distribution equipment, switchgear, transformers, PDUs, CRAC/CRAH units, chillers, pumps and associated building services plant.
  • Perform routine inspections, operational checks and condition monitoring activities to ensure the reliability and availability of critical infrastructure.
  • Coordinate and oversee planned preventative maintenance activities, ensuring all work is completed safely and in accordance with approved procedures.
  • Respond to infrastructure alarms, equipment failures, power events and cooling incidents, taking ownership of fault diagnosis, escalation and service restoration activities.
  • Act as the first point of technical escalation during critical incidents, ensuring effective communication, coordination and resolution.
  • Carry out fault-finding and troubleshooting across electrical, mechanical and control systems, identifying root causes and supporting long-term corrective actions.
  • Support and participate in switching operations, isolations and maintenance activities in accordance with site safety procedures and operational standards.
  • Review, author and execute maintenance procedures, permits to work, risk assessments, Methods of Procedure (MOPs), Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Emergency Operating Procedures (EOPs).
  • Supervise technicians, specialist vendors and contractors working within live critical environments, ensuring compliance with site standards and safe systems of work.
  • Utilise DCIM, BMS and environmental monitoring platforms to assess infrastructure performance, identify emerging risks and support operational decision making.
  • Maintain accurate shift logs, maintenance records, incident reports and asset documentation, ensuring all activities are correctly recorded and communicated during shift handovers.
  • Support capacity management, power utilisation reviews and cooling performance monitoring to ensure infrastructure remains resilient and fit for future growth.
  • Assist with root cause analysis investigations following equipment failures or operational incidents, implementing corrective and preventative actions where required.
  • Drive high standards of operational excellence, housekeeping, safety and regulatory compliance throughout the facility.
  • Support emergency response activities and business continuity procedures to maintain the availability and resilience of critical services.
  • Mentor junior engineers and technicians, sharing technical knowledge and helping to develop the next generation of critical facilities professionals.
