Job description

Criminology / Psychology Graduate - Leicester City

Salary Scale: TA2
Start Date: ASAP
Contract Type: Long Term / Temporary to Permanent

GSL SEN Education is seeking Psychology, Criminology, Sociology, or Education Studies graduates based in Leicester to work as SEN Learning Support Assistants (LSAs) in a specialist school for children with EHCPs related to trauma, social, emotional, and mental health challenges, ADHD, OCD, and other conditions.

The LSA role is ideal for sincere graduates looking to gain practical experience in the field. It supports aspirations in Clinical Psychology, Advocacy, Youth/Social Justice, and provides valuable exposure for those considering a career in Teaching. This role highlights the importance and nuance of supporting children with diverse mental health needs.

When working with students in an Alternative Learning Provision, remember these two key questions:

  1. Can you build relationships based on comfort through a Restorative approach? (Building comfort over content is crucial)
  2. Can you demonstrate the value of education to students?

These are essential, as each child’s mental health and trauma are unique, influenced by their culture, home life, and personal circumstances. Building trust and relationships through a restorative model is vital and should never be overlooked.

It is important to be able to qualify and disqualify students from SEN and mental health sectors based on your understanding.

This role requires a strong knowledge of safeguarding and child protection. Successful applicants must pass all background checks, including an enhanced DBS on the update service.

Role details include:

  • Large provision of 60 children, aged 5-16, boys and girls
  • Working alongside outstanding SEN professionals and like-minded Psychology and Criminology graduates
  • Potential shadowing of specialists, depending on schedules and individual needs
  • Classes of no more than 6 students, with a mix of 1:1 and small group work
  • Focus on Key and Personal Skills, Sports, Cooking, Technology, Music, Drama, Photography, and Art
  • Training and support provided by the school through an excellent training system
