Job summary

National Gas in the UK is recruiting a Craftsperson to join National Gas Services (NGS) and help maintain critical gas infrastructure safely and reliably across the UK and Ireland. The role is site-based, involves maintenance, repair, inspection, and emergency response as part of a specialist field team.

You will work outdoors with a practical engineering focus, develop specialist skills in pipelines and pressure systems, and be part of a company investing in safety and energy resilience.

Qualifications

• Experience in operational maintenance, repair, or mechanical engineering.
• A mechanical engineering background and practical problem-solving skills.
• Understanding of safe working practices.
• Ability to use computer systems to access and record operational information.
• A strong commitment to safety and high-quality work.

Responsibilities

• Supporting specialist activities including under-pressure drilling, flow stopping, valve repair, recompression, testing, and in-line inspection.
• Delivering maintenance and repair work that helps keep gas networks operating safely and efficiently.
• Preparing and maintaining tools, materials, and specialist equipment for field operations.
• Ensuring all work is completed safely and in line with industry and National Gas standards.
• Recording operational information, materials, and additional works accurately.
• Taking part in the standby rota, supporting emergency pipeline repair services.

• Additional earning potential through overtime and standby

Location: Ambergate

Working pattern: Site-based, 5 days a week

Travel: Regular (national)

Location requirement: Based within a 40-mile radius of our Ambergate site

What you'll bring

• Experience in operational maintenance, repair, or mechanical engineering
• A mechanical engineering background and practical problem-solving skills
• Understanding of safe working practices
• Ability to use computer systems to access and record operational information
• A strong commitment to safety and high-quality work
• Full UK driving licence
• NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in a mechanical, gas, or engineering discipline, or a completed apprenticeship
• Experience working on pressure systems above 7 bar
• Knowledge of gas transmission or distribution networks
• Experience in under-pressure drilling, flow stopping, recompression, pipe fitting, in-line inspection, or pressure system inspection
• Knowledge of National Gas or industry standards and procedures
