Job description

Legal Counsel – Digital, Technology and AI

This is a unique opportunity for a talented and motivated technology lawyer to join GSK’s Global Legal and Compliance team. This Legal Counsel role sits within the Digital, Privacy and Cybersecurity team, supporting GSK’s global digital transformation and providing legal advice on a wide range of technology matters including artificial intelligence (AI), open source, software licensing, platform agreements, and cloud services.

The ideal candidate will be a pragmatic and solution-oriented solicitor or barrister with experience advising on digital health, AI, or broader tech law issues. While the focus of the role is on digital and technology matters, familiarity with data protection laws (such as UK GDPR and international equivalents) will be advantageous.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide legal advice on technology-related initiatives including AI tools and platforms, software licensing, SaaS agreements, open-source software, and emerging technologies.
  • Support digital innovation projects across GSK’s commercial, R&D and supply chain functions, ensuring legal risk is identified and appropriately managed.
  • Review, draft and negotiate a range of technology-related agreements including licensing, collaboration and development agreements, with a focus on digital tools and platforms.
  • Contribute to the development and rollout of legal guidance and training to stakeholders on AI, tech, and digital contracting matters.
  • Advise on legal aspects of GSK’s AI governance policies and contribute to the operationalisation of the AI Standard Operating Procedure (SOP).
  • Advise on strategy around data, ethics and analytics.
  • Support cross-functional initiatives involving Legal, Tech, Procurement, Cybersecurity, and Compliance teams.
  • Monitor legal and regulatory developments in the fields of AI, open-source software, cloud computing, and related areas, providing strategic input as appropriate.
  • Assist in the development and refinement of contract templates and playbooks to support efficient delivery of legal advice at scale.
  • Work with Privacy colleagues on intersecting issues, such as responsible AI, data sharing, and privacy-enhancing technologies.
Requirements:
  • Qualified solicitor or barrister (England & Wales or equivalent), with a minimum of 2 years PQE, in technology law, gained in private practice or in-house.
  • Strong experience advising on technology transactions and/or digital projects, ideally within a regulated industry.
  • Interest in and knowledge of AI technologies and their legal implications, including open-source licensing and algorithmic accountability.
  • Familiarity with UK and EU data protection frameworks (e.g. UK GDPR) is desirable but not essential.
  • You will have a risk-based approach to digital, with a solution-oriented approach. Ability to cut through complex legal issues and deliver advice with simplicity is key to this role.
  • A clear communicator with the ability to provide commercial, practical advice to stakeholders across the business.
  • Strong drafting and negotiation skills, with an ability to manage complexity and prioritise effectively.
  • Collaborative mindset with a willingness to learn and contribute to a dynamic and fast-evolving team.
