Job description

Job Description

Controls & Instrumentation Engineer

Full Time

Derby/Hybrid (on average 3 days a week in the office)

We are looking for Controls & Instrumentation Engineers to help design, deliver, and support Civil Aerospace test facilities globally. This includes Test Bed 80, the world's largest and most advanced indoor aerospace test bed.

The Experimental Systems design team is responsible for delivering a wide range of measurement and control system technologies. The team has recently completed the design, installation, and commissioning of all data systems on Test bed 80 from concept to first engine run, including the first run on the UltraFan, our highest instrumented engine ever. Successful candidates may choose to specialise in a key skill or develop a broad range of engineering skills to support Rolls-Royce's core aero-engine products throughout their lifecycle.

Why Roll-Royce?

We deliver the best jet engines in the world and are committed to powering society towards a net zero future. Join us and be part of an inclusive culture that invests in your continuous learning and development, offering a wide range of experiences.

Work at Rolls-Royce in a highly technical, engineering environment, alongside a world-class team of aviation engineers.

What we offer

We provide excellent development opportunities, a competitive salary, and exceptional benefits including bonuses, employee support assistance, and discounts. Our hybrid working model allows flexibility between office, home, or remote locations, with an expectation of approximately three days per week in the workplace for collaboration and specific activities.

Responsibilities:

  • Design of new measurement and control system solutions, including high-speed data acquisition.
  • Aircraft to engine controller interface communication and simulation systems, including flight support.
  • Integration and commissioning of new signal conditioning systems.
  • Integration of IT systems, including networks, data transfer, and storage.
  • Requirements gathering, analysis, and system specification preparation.
  • Design, monitoring, and acceptance testing of third-party systems.
  • Potential travel to test facilities or suppliers worldwide.

The successful candidate will work as part of a team, lead technical projects, and support the global business model, including short-term international assignments.

Who we're looking for:

At Rolls-Royce, we value agility, boldness, collaboration, and simplicity. We seek candidates with experience in some, not necessarily all, of the following areas:

  • Data acquisition and high-speed measurement techniques.
  • Sensors, signal conditioning, and measurement chains.
  • Control system design and integration, including safety considerations (e.g., PLC).
  • Requirements capture and systems engineering methods.
  • System architecture design.
  • Basic understanding of software engineering and platforms (Python, C/C++, C#, Java, Linux, Windows) is desirable.
  • Knowledge of current products, technologies, and methods.

Candidates should have a proven track record of working under pressure to meet project deadlines. Enthusiastic, self-motivated individuals capable of producing high-standard work are encouraged to apply.

This role suits both experienced engineers and early-career engineers interested in test systems and electronics, eager to learn and grow. Training and development opportunities are plentiful, with excellent prospects within the organization.

The salary and professional level depend on experience and skills.
