Job summary

Airedale by Modine in Greater London is seeking a Controls Engineer to join the Controls Department in Product Development and report to the Senior Lead Controls Engineer. You will develop and test software that automates mechanical components and validates controls hardware.

You will work with multi-disciplinary teams, pursue innovations for efficiency and reliability, maintain software release traces, support manufacturing quality, and contribute to R&D projects and customer-focused builds.

Qualifications

  • Experience with PLC or microcontroller technology and IEC61131 programming languages.
  • Knowledge of closed loop control systems and methodology – especially PID.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential.
  • Appreciation of the requirements for developing ergonomic display and web based user interfaces (e.g., HMI, SCADA, touch screen).
  • Good knowledge of the fundamental principles of electronics and experience working with electrical systems.
  • Understanding of serial communication protocols including Modbus, BACnet and Ethernet TCP/IP.

Responsibilities

  • Pursue market-leading technical advances to improve efficiency, reliability and precision.
  • Use tools to manage software improvements and track releases and versioning.
  • Support manufacturing to ensure product quality leaving the factory.
  • Assist R&D test lab with validation testing of prototypes and bespoke products.
  • Attend supplier meetings to identify opportunities for innovation.
  • Create technical literature and processes for correct unit configuration on site and in factory.

Position Description

An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Controls Engineer to work as part of the Controls Department in Product Development reporting to the Senior Lead Controls Engineer

Key Responsibilities
  • As part of a Controls engineering team, develop and test software solutions which automate the mechanical components of Airedale products, and assist with the specification and validation of controls hardware and electronics.
  • Work within defined processes and procedures to ensure quality, consistency and safety of Airedale products in line with appropriate standards and regulations.
  • Collaborate with multi-disciplinary engineering teams to design, develop and qualify both platform product development projects (in support of the R&D roadmap) and proprietary key customer projects within agreed deadlines.
  • Pursue market leading technical advances to deliver innovation focusing especially on efficiency, reliability and precision.
  • Use development tools to manage software improvements and bug fixes on existing products, and maintain traceability of software releases and versioning.
  • Support manufacturing to ensure the quality of products leaving the factory.
  • Assist the R&D test laboratory with validation testing of engineering prototypes, proof of concept research projects and bespoke products for key customers.
  • Attend internal/external supplier meetings to identify opportunities for innovation.
  • Create technical literature and processes to ensure unit configuration is performed correctly both on site and in the factory.
Required Education & Qualifications
  • Experience with PLC or microcontroller technology and IEC61131 programming languages.
  • Knowledge of closed loop control systems and methodology – especially PID.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential.
  • Appreciation of the requirements for developing ergonomic display and web based user interfaces (e,g., HMI, SCADA, touch screen etc.).
  • Good knowledge of the fundamental principles of electronics and experience working with electrical systems.
  • A basic understanding of mechanical systems and the fundamentals of thermodynamics.
  • A basic understanding of serial communication protocols including Modbus, BACnet and Ethernet TCP/IP.
  • Minimum Degree level in an Engineering discipline. Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics or Computer Science are preferred.
  • A desire to pioneer new and innovative solutions with “outside the box” thinking.
  • Must be able to work on projects autonomously, be self-motivated and able to take initiative.
  • Enthusiastic and positive attitude towards problem solving.Desirable:
  • An understanding of HVAC refrigeration systems.
  • Previous experience in industrial automation, especially with HVAC or BMS specific controls systems (Carel, Siemens, TREND, Tridium etc.).
  • Understanding of building management systems (BMS).
  • Appreciation of datacentre HVAC applications and products, especially Chillers, CRAH, CRAC, FWU and CDU.
  • Awareness of Cyber Security fundamentals and legislation
